Re: Genoa / Chute winches

No problems installing the clutches on the smooth circles in back of the winches. If I remember correctly they are solid glass and I didn't need backing plates.

Re: Genoa / Chute winches

I never bothered with a new winch and installed clutches on both sides. The sheets go back to turning blocks, through the clutches, and to the existing winches. Works great!

Re: Bike rack on Stern of PDQ 32

We bought 2 Dahon Mariner fold-up bikes and love them. They just barely fit in the stern lockers, along with a Honda 2000 generator, shore power cable, and misc. boots and shoes.

masthead light

I climbed the mast the other day but couldn't get high enough to see down onto the top of the mast. The cover for my masthead light is missing. Any idea what the replacement would be? I have a '99 Altair, mast by Offshore Spars, I think.

Re: L.P. Gas locker smell + +

I had a propane additive smell on my '99 Altair, too. I checked all the lines with soapy water to no avail. Turned out to be the regulator!
I hang an 8' Port-A-Bote on my davits: light and good fit. Do not, however, attach it to the hull screws near the transom.

Re: New owner/ electrical questions

Chris, We had to slide the remaining 50 watt panels over to accommodate the new slightly longer 80 watt panel. As a result, they are not as protected on the ends--nor are we!--as the old arrangement. We may add some kind of barrier around the ends but so far it's been ok. It was a good time to recau...

Re: New owner/ electrical questions

I just replaced one of our 3 original 50 watt Semen solar panels with an 80 watt Sharp panel from Power Up. 2 years ago, I replaced the old Sunsaver solar controller with a Blue Sky Energy Solar Boost 2512i and it seems to work better. On the 2 (!!) really sunny days we've had in the northeast in th...

double helm seat

Does anyone have a double seat at the helm? My Classic came with no seat and I added a single. I'd love to be able to sit next to my co-captain.

propane oven installation

I have an SMEV minigrill propane oven I want to install on my PDQ32 Altaire but no one on Long Island seems to know how to connect the propane line to the oven. I've been to plumbing supply, propane supply, and RV dealers and, of course, marine supply stores. It's just a steel tube approx. 5/16"...

Re: oven without cooktop

I finally found a suitable propane oven for my Altair, a mini SMEV oven, for $200 new. I've seen it advertised on British RV supply stores online. I picked mine up from a former PDQ employee courtesy of James Power. It fits (barely) on the microwave shelf above the cooktop. I'm in the process of ins...

Re: Genoa questions

I meant asymmetrical spinnaker. Do you have a picture, thinwater? My set-up is very basic: a bridle running from one bow to the other. Adjustments--as you said, not many needed--are made by adjusting the length of the bridle and the location of the tack which is just a loop in the bridle.

Re: Genoa questions

There's always the possibility of a cruising spinnaker. After a lot of experimentation, I finally figured out a good way to fly it. I am now capable of setting it up by myself, using the autopilot. Of course, it's not convenient but I've found I can sail well (and fast) up to a beam reach and use it...

If you mean a stand alone oven, James, I'd love to hear about it.

oven without cooktop

We're looking for an oven for our PDQ 32. As you know, there is no room under the cooktop for an oven, even if we were to replace the cooktop and get a combo stove/ oven. So far, we've considered a Dutch oven (cheap and simple: just put it on the stove) and a Dometic Origo 6100. The latter is a non-...
