Impellers on Yanmar Engines

Yesterday I changed the raw water impellers on my Yanmar 100s for the first time. What on earth was Yanmar/PDQ thinking when they put the water pump behind/below the generator? This seems idiotic. At any rate, has anyone found a better way to replace the impeller other than removing the generator a...

Charters

Two couples from our yacht club here in middle Tennessee charter with the outfit on the Chesapeake and reported having a wonderful time. If I remember correctly, the charter company has 2004 version boats with the 75 horse engines. We have a 2004 with the 100 hp, and we strongly recommend the larger...

BVI

Annie and I have chartered 8 times in the BVI and US Virgin Islands since 1994. We've always chartered Grand Banks trawlers from Trawlers in Paradise with great results. Denise and Tommy McCoy own and run the operation. Don't give Tommy any quarter.... He's a "biker-dude". There are some p...

Lubricants

We've been using SailCote (?sp) and have found it very useful for lubricating most metal fittings, zippers, and places we want to exclude moisture such as the shore-power cabel inputs. Works great on the fittings for the various gates on MV34/51 as well as the shore-power electric and tv-cable conne...

Just to bring folks up to date on our Xantrex problem, even though the unit was a few weeks out of warranty, Xantrex replaced the unit at no charge, which we very much appreciated. Putting in the new one (we like to do our own maintenance) was a definite learning experience. Hint, don't trust the in...

Update on the replacement inverter. All went swimmingly until I appled the torque wrench to the DC posts. Setting my wrench at just between the high and low recommended torques, the positive bolt broke off about 1/3 the way up the bolt. Great consternation and knashing (? sp) of teeth. Xantrex said ...

We did the same as you to read the seriel number. The "turn everything off and wait 30 minutes" worked for us, as well, and when the error message came along only every few months, we thought it an anomile. That was last fall. Then this spring we started to get the error every week or two....

An update for those who are interested. It looks as though Xantrex is going to replace our inverter/charger gratis even though it is a few weeks out of warranty. The behavior of a professional company, in my opinion. Chris at PDQ (customer service) has offered to walk me through the configuration on...

We found replacement plastic bowls from both Groco and Surflow that are exact matches for the filter housing on our boat, which PDQ said is made by some company I've never heard of before and who's website did not offer replacement filter assemblies.

Thanks for your input. The 4/0 wiring that PDQ uses to connect batteries and inverter/charger is a suitable substitution for the 350 MCM, according to a Xantrex websight I found today. I'm wondering what Xantrex will do, as our problem was first noticed last fall, got worse this spring, and finally ...

Prosine Inverter Problems

We have begun to get error messages from our Prosine 2.0 inverter, such as " Internal error 3073 " or " Internal error 0258 ". The fellow at Xantrex said this is a common problem if the cabling to the battery banks is 2-aught (?sp) or less. Apparently the 2.0 unit requires at lea...

HVAC Raw Water Filter

We have found crazing in both plastic see-through bowls of the HVAC raw water filters. The one in the port engine room also has a crack all the way through it, allowing water to leak out (small amounts). This is not a case of improper winterizing (what PDQ said caused the problem) as we religiously ...

Transmission Filter Housing Cover

We were running back from a local anchorage about 15 miles upstream when we lost thrust from the port engine. Were able to finish the trip on one engine although the boat would not easily turn away from the down engine. Inspection back at the dock showed that the cover of the transmission filter hou...

Greetings from inland. Annie and I bought our 34 (MV/34-51) in 2004 and brought her home through the Great Lakes and Western Rivers (see Passagemaker Magazine, October 2005 issue for an article on the trip). We faced seas constantly in the 8-10 feet area crossing Lake Erie. The boat handled them fin...
