SmartController Battery Replacement
The original batteries in our Raymarine ST6002 SmartController remote are losing their aility to hold a charge. Online research indicates there are aftermarket battery suppliers out there that claim to have compatible replacment batteries for this unit (the Canadian suppliers are canadianbatteries.c...

Re: Starter Breaker
BJ, James Power should be able to advise you. He diagnosed and replaced a starter relay for us when it left us stranded at one of the locks on the Trent-Severn Canal, back in 2013. I believe he can be reached at james_power@rogers.com.

Re: Starter Breaker
BJ, our experience may not be relevant, but just in case: We have not had a problem with the 'starter breaker' on our 110's, however we have had to replace the starter relay on both engines (maybe this is a different name for the same part?). If the relay fails the engine will not start. The Yanmar ...

Re: Catch 22
Hi Mike, Thanks for weighing in. At max bulk charge to the batteries I have also observed a load of about 12-15 AC amps on the generator (on shore power too for that matter), similar to your experience. This week I spoke with tech support at both Xantrex and Northern Lights, and learned quite a bit....

Re: Catch 22
Thanks for your comments John. Our inverter/charger is a xantrex, original to the boat. It looks like I need to read the manual to see what can be done to increase the charge rate. I don’t mind running other systems to get the load up on the generator when we are charging the batteries, as long as I...

Catch 22
We are currently in the break-in period for a new 6kw Northern Lights generator . The manual strongly recommends a draw of at least 25-35 amps (50 to 70 percent load) for the first 100 hours of operation. Our Catch-22 situation is that the charging system appears to limit the charging rate to the ba...

Re: Issue with the head
Thanks for the advice James, it's much appreciated.
It seems this issue is not unique to His Idea. Having this forum is a great help!

Re: Issue with the head
Thanks for the tip on the location of the valve Kent. I'll have a look at the solenoid when we next get down to the boat.
Cheers,
John

Re: Issue with the head
It's probably relevant to note that when our original fresh water pump packed it in we had James Power install a simpler pump combined with an accumulator tank. Upon reflection it has dawned on me that sometimes we leave the boat with the system pressurized (or partially pressurized) and sometimes n...

Issue with the head
Occasionally in the past but more frequently of late, upon returning to our vessel after a period of time (1-2 weeks) we find that the toilet bowl has filled with water. It does not appear to be overflowing (yet), as there is no evident water in the bilge. All our auxillary systems except the batter...

Re: Forward tanks
Thanks for the heads up James. As soon as I'm next at the boat I'm going to double check what I have sitting on top of the fuel and water tanks. I think I'm ok, but better safe than sorry.
Cheers,
John

Re: Great Loop 2024
Have fun Mike! We were fortunate to do the loop on His Idea over 2012, 2013 and 2014, and had many great experiences. If we have any regrets it's that we didn't do more along the way, so by all means take all the time you have. If you're interested, we've chronicled our cruising adventures at https:...

Re: Generator water intake obstruction
Problem solved. The restriction turned out to be a stubborn mass of eelgrass that eventually arrived (not sure how exactly) at the intake port for the strainer bowl, where I was able to remove it. No air leaks evident anywhere, and the system is now working as it should. Thanks to all who offered th...
