Re: Battery charger

It sounds like you have about 750 Amp.-hour house battery capacity. A 40 amp. charger is too small! Recommendations suggest that batteries be re-charged at a rate of about 10-12% of the installed capacity. In your case, that means 75 to 90 Amps. At these "low" re-charge rates you should ex...

Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

Hi Jim, I discussed the three vs four bladed props for Kama Kat with Simon of PDQ virtually from day one (end of 2003). We had no disagreements on the potential benefits of going to four blades. His arguments for staying with three blades seemed to be two fold; first, it was less expensive and secon...

Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

Dick, Just a word of caution when buying off-the-shelf four bladed props. :!: The relatively closer spacing of the blades (as compared to three blades) opens the potential of harmonic vibrations to be induced in the blades by the trailing edges' vortecies, causing a laud "singing" noise at...

Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

Hi Dick, I would like to bring to your attention the topic of "advising on options" originally posted on this forum back in Sept. 2004. I added my comments there in Jan. 2005, discussing the four bladed props. Yes, it is the props that generate the noise, by vibrating the hulls like a drum...

Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

John, 1. Yes, a "typo", 17.2kts at 3750RPM 2. When the contour of the prop blade is not symetrical but swept back, it is "skewed". This causes radial sections of the blade to enter the water sequentially. This helps reduce prop. vibrations, making for a more quiet operation. 3. 1...

Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

Hi John, Our original props were four blades, 16in. diameter with 13in. pitch. When we did sea trials with PDQ in April 2004, at time of assuming ownership, with three people on board, no dinghy and otherwise "empty" ....(their low fuel and water level, for functional testing purposes), Ka...

Re: Down East Loop 2008

The DECL trip was delayed by one year. Kama Kat completed this loop at the end of August 2009 ......all went well.
Now, we are looking for new adventures. :D

Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

Happy to hear about your good experience with the four bladed props. Kama Kat has been using such props since 2004 ....we are fitted with 75HP engines. Once, while our props were being repaired, we ran with three bladed props for about one month .......never want to do that again. :D

Hull Extension Report

Please refer to my posting of "Hull Extension" 21 Sept. 2008 for background. As promised, here are my observations after about 860 hours of cruising; Return trip from Lake Ontario to Florida Keys, and the Down East Circle Loop (from Lake Ontario, around Nova Scotia and back north at New Yo...

Hull Extension

Kama Kat's hulls were extended about 18inches, by the addition of "swim platforms". Effectively, the hulls are extended, with the top of the extension at about the bottom of the boot stripe and a small platform fills the space between the folded back swim ladder leggs (similar to original ...

Down East Loop 2008

We have put over 2100 hours on our Hull #42 since we picked it up in Whitby in April 2004. To date, we did various "loops" from our home port of Cobourg on Lake Ontario, such as the Great Loop, Champlain, Rideau, Trent Severn including Lakes Huron, Erie, Ontario and part of the St. Lawrenc...

convection-microwave oven

Hello, We have a Sharp Model R-820BW since 2004. At that time, only this make/model fit the available space. When you do make the switch to convection-microwave, you may want to consider modifying the electrical connection at the control pannel so you may use the microwave function off the house bat...

Use the Fuel in your FWD Tank

Hi John and Diane, We travel with the vent and fuel transfer lines open all the time. It appears as if the bottom of the fwd tank is higher than the top of the main tank, so reverse syphoning is not a concern. Occasionally, the syphoning process needs to be "kick-started" with the fuel tra...

Use of the fuel in your FWD tank

:D Stagnant diesel fuel at "warm" temperatures is just a problem waiting to hapen, as confirmed by the first posting. We maintain a constant fuel turn-over, by automatically draining the FWD tank AFT (opening vent and tranfer line valves) and mostly taking on fresh fuel in the front. Gravi...
