Re: Whitby to NYC

Went from Hell Gate to Whitby in about 4 days on a 100 hp 34 - in delivery mode. I say about as the days were not consecutive or contiguous. The Erie Canal was at flood stage and was closed off and on for several days.

Re: Livingston Catamaran dinghy

Have a Livingston 9' with an 8hp 2-stroke on my MV34 and I love it! It is the light version (without the reinforcing pieces along the gunwales) and only weighs about 110 lbs. It is extremely stable; I can stand on the gunwale amidships, and it will not flip. I've had no problems with flooding but th...

Have gotten targets on AIS from over 220 mi. - no doubt with a little help from atmospheric skip.

Re: Fabulous Delivery Team!

Thanks Preston. You are most gracious. A beautiful, smooth running, no-problems boat coupled with a great owner made our task very simple. So glad we could help.

Thanks for a FUN trip!!

Re: EPIRB Battery Replacement

I had my ACR EPIRB serviced through a firm in the Canaveral area several years ago. The name "Viking" comes to mind. Service was good, but not fast. The price was about what you quoted. Would love to give more details but we are "on the road" and won't have access to ThomKat's ma...

Re: Bridles and Mooring

Used the Wichard style(i.e.,made by someone else) for many years in my "pre-Cat" days. Forgot to get it off the boat before I sold it is the only reason I don't use it now. (Yeah, yeah... I know, I could buy another one) They work fine. Secret to keeping it engaged is to not let it even to...

Re: Does Shallow Water Slow You Down?

It also depends on whether you are in planing mode or displacement mode. You will speed up when you are in planing mode and slow down in displacement mode. It's all because of the compressibility effects mentioned above.

Re: Stuart FL - Southpoint Anchorage

Last we heard, and that was in the early spring of 2008, was that there will be another mooring field but it will be located either SW of the previous location (on the same side of the St Lucie River) or more likely, diagonally across the river to the WSW. A suggestion would be to contact Dick or Ca...

Re: Port engine runs hotter than Starboard.

Hi Sandy, Like John, we have had an overheating problem on our port engine (75 hp) - but only at max RPM. We too found several potential causes, but the over riding problem was a defective heat exchanger (HE). About the time our engines were assembled, Yanmar got a batch of HEs from their supplier t...

Re: saving fuel by going slow?

Despite the fact that when on transits, we generally drive ThomKat slowly, we will ALWAYS run at 3400 rpm or more for a short period of time (15 - 30 min) at the end of the day to ensure that the turbos are brought up to temperature and the crud is burned off. The hazard with running at low speed is...

Re: saving fuel by going slow?

Hi John & Diane, Sorry we missed you on your run north this year! We generally run ThomKat at 1800 - 1900 rpm except for sprints across larger bodies of water (i.e., Gulf of Mexico, large bays, etc) with short weather windows. With 1459.7 engine hours and 212 genset hours, our fuel usage is has ...

Re: Fuel Transfer

Have used James P's technique for a re-prime (at the suggestion of Chris Calver) and it worked quite well. I got into the "starvation" mode when I tried leaving the valves open to allow the fuel to flow to the rear tank "on demand". I have no idea what I did differently, but sinc...

Hi Henry, It was explained to me by our commissioning crew (Jay & Dave) that the genset pickup tube does, in fact, go to the bottom of the tank. The reason for the transfer pickup tube not going to the bottom is to provide a reservoir for the genset. So, when the gauge reads empty, you still hav...

Henry,

The transfer pickup in the forward tank does not go all the way to the bottom of the tank. There should be about 15 gals remaining in the tank to support generator usage once you've reached "empty".
