Re: Nova Kool problems

If it makes ice in either situation the refrigeration system works fine. When you attach the mounting flange is something flexing or bending out of shape so that air leaks in around the door?

Re: replacement courtesy lights

You will save on electric consumption, have more light and they don't heat up nearly as much. Win, win, win.

Re: replacement courtesy lights

I presume you are considering the 'droopy eyelid' style courtesy lights inside. I long since found wonderful red LED replacements (no new holes), although I can't recall precisely the model/stock numbers. Reply if you need specifics.

Re: Powercat Charter Available

Thank you so much for the timely information. I stand corrected. I don't expect to charter mine, but it is nice knowing that a procedure is available for small boat charters to bypass 90 year old laws about protecting US shipping interests.

Re: Powercat Charter Available

If your PDQ powercat, which was built in Canada (eh?) is chartered in US waters you likely are in violation of the Jones Act: The Merchant Marine Act of 1920 (P.L. 66-261) is a United States Federal statute that regulates maritime commerce in U.S. waters and between U.S. ports. Section 27, better kn...

Re: fluxgate compass

What brand and model of fluxgate compass do you folks have, and what sort of navigation do you do? Mine is a 2002 Raymarine outfit (warts and all), and I don't 'swing the compass' rather I go through Raymarine's 'linearization' procedure, where after aligning the compass on a single heading to the G...

Re: Heavy weather strategies

Of course, a catamaran hull displays just about the opposite relative motions in a seaway that a soft chined monohull will. The catamaran will be exceptionally resistant to rolling motion apart from each hull floating up and down as the wave passes beneath it. However with our slender catamaran hull...

Where is your fluxgate head presently mounted? Mine (hull 34012 - old style interior) is under the forward seat back of the dinette.

Re: window gaskets

The decals on Stray Cat's say "Bomar." Stray Cat is 34012, splashed in August 2002, and although that is quite a time before your 34060 I don't think they changed in between. I Googled this: http://www.pompanette.com/bomar

Sliding Door Latch

Years ago (in MV34, hull 012 the Stray Cat still berthed in Portland Oregon), I restored the functionality of the sliding door latch which had torn out the threads that mounted it to the door frame by cutting in a stainless steel nut and with some clever epoxy work had the door latching away as befo...

Re: Yanmar Engine Full Power Run Cycle

Every diesel loves to clear it's thoat from time to time. Nobody wants any nasty carbon in the turbo! On the other hand, this is boating my friend. These are Yanmars, which with proper maintenance and reasonable care and feeding will outlive us all. There is a reason the designers (TC +) didn't acco...

Re: Oil Change Pump Recommendations

Navy A4,

I like it. The drippy goop is already in the bag with the filter.

BioSocks in the engine drip pan are OK, and likely gobble up the oils and metal oxides, but controlling the mess at the edge of the engine block is my kinda solution.

Re: chlorine tablets in AC strainers

Beyond it's effect on nylon components, the chlorine is exceptionally corrosive to stainless steel (think heat exchangers and the like). Bad news, don't use chlorine compounds. Consider cutting a few little rings from copper water pipe and tossing them in the strainers. The copper ions in the water ...

Re: wood finish

Rob P. told me once that the woodwork was all cherry wood with clear urethane finish, not stained. For straightforward REfinishing I suggest a very light sanding, solvent wipedown, tack cloth wipedown and the water-based urethane varnish. Is your woodwork really darkening with age? Mine is sun bleac...
