Re: beating to windward

While I still have Page 83, for the past year I've enjoyed the use of Siesta, a Chris White Atlantic 42 with big daggerboards. I love them. She tacks thru less than 90 degrees, perhaps 80 in ideal conditions. Unfortunately, my partner has decided to sell her. I've gotten to know Chris White in the p...

Re: Catch 22 on the Chesapeake

Hi FX and Bobbie! Glad you found us, but I DISTINCTLY recall telling you about the Forum last year! [g] These tricks work. The sleeper here is high siding the traveller so that after the tack the main is out further, and not fighting the jib to bring the bows into the wind. Bring the traveller back ...

Re: What engines will fit 1990 PDQ 36'

The Yamaha High Thrust T9.9s (and the 8s) are unique among outboards for our use. They alone have a near 3:1 gear ratio and room for 11 3/4" diameter props. That means that they can develop thier max hp at less than 10 knots. The Honda 15 has enough power to cavitate their smaller, faster props...

Re: Anchor chain hook suggestions

I have two like that, Drew. There's no question they work, but they are a bit more fussy to rig. I think using the rode itself as one side of the bridle is simpler. I got the first from a multihuller in Deltaville who had several cut out of heavy mild steel, at a cost of $40 each. The second came wi...

Re: Anchor chain hook suggestions

I've played with a number of chain hooks and knots in the past. I think the simplest and best is the pricey Wichard, with enough 1/2" three stand nylon spliced on to reach accross the boat while tied to a cleat. once hooked I let enough chain out to place the hook on the extended centerline of ...

Re: New Owners: Engine management

I wouldn't worry too much about your engine performance, you have enough power to make progress into some pretty rough conditions, However, if you are a tweeker (most of us are) here's the start of a list of things to check: Props: are they the right pitch? Are there any dings or bends in the blades...

Sigh...

Karma; like Women, you can't live without it. They won't permit that.

The second engine; don't leave home without it...

I'm just miffed because I should be out sailing, but the port engine (on Siesta) didn't start yesterday, and I made a rational, mature, adult decision to not start a trip with one engine. We were supposed to go to a big (180 folks) 33rd Anniversary Party for S.O.S. at Rock Hall, but there has been a...

Re: Oil Change Pump Recommendations

It's a dirty job. All you can do is make it as easy as possible, and remember, we are lucky; there a re a lot of saildrives out there that can only be serviced OUT OF THE WATER. Warm up the oil first. It takes a third the time and effort of pumping cold oil. Tuck an oil absorber cloth under the filt...

Re: "Buggy" Fuel Problem

The Outboard PDQ 36 uses the same or similar tank, and after a negligent winter I had to pull mine out and try to clean it. I ended up pouring a gallon of alcohol and carb cleaner into it, rotating the tank many times, pouring it out and then blowing it out with the exhaust end of a vacuum cleaner. ...

Re: Genoa questions

That's a relief! Looks like you got it under control. If you do decide to send it back, a lower clew will give you a lot more sail area, with a lower CP a bit further aft and that's all good horsepower. With my screacher I'm alway worried about uncovering a rudder behind a wave or wake, that would p...

Re: Genoa questions

Barber haulers are lines that pull a headsail sheet inboard. The commonly consist of a light weight snatch block (the gray plastic kind) that attaches to the sheet, a fairlead, and a cleat. They should be located just aft of the clew and inboard enough to pull the clew in to about 7 degrees off cente...

Re: St. Michaels, Maryland Anchorage or Dockage on San Domingo C

I've sailed in and out of St Michaels several times on Page 83. In fact I had the best ride ever coming out on a screaming reach, passing my arch nemesis in the club who was flying every scrap of sail he owned. I've also run aground on what was once an ancient Oyster Shell Mound. Nolite spurios te c...

Re: MYSTERY MAST WELDS - EXPLANATION PLEASE!

The extrusion process used to create the mast blank is not a continuous process. There is a maximum length the extruder can produce usually set by external considerations such as the size of the building, the amount of material that goes into the process, etc. There will be a weld when two extrusion...
