Re: Refinishing Salon Table

We now have our salon table back from the refinisher and are very pleased with the results. He was able to address virtually all of the fading, and the grain now stands our beautifully. He did advise that the veneer will likely handle only one re-sand of this nature, so from now on we'll be extra ca...

Re: Refinishing Salon Table

John, I'm not surprised there are others with a similar situation to ours. I'll be getting the table top refinished within the next couple of weeks, and will post pictures of the outcome. Hopefully we can get a result that is close to the original, or at least have a colour that is consistent across...

Re: Refinishing Salon Table

Thanks very much for responding James, and no worries, that's still useful information for me to share with my refinisher.

Hope all is well.....

Refinishing Salon Table

After 15 years of use our salon table has acquired a variety of nicks and bumps, along with serious fading due to sun exposure. For this reason we have decided to have the table refinished. In order to get a decent match with the other woodwork our professional refinisher has asked what stain (if an...

Re: Servicing Rudder Posts

The rudder glands were adjusted today. It took about 45 minutes to complete both sides. There were no issues with the posts or other parts. Because the packing is likely original, the technician recommended a repack the next time the boat is out of the water for maintenance. Thanks again to all who ...

Re: Servicing Rudder Posts

James and John, thanks for the additional information, it's appreciated. Hopefully an adjustment is all that's required. That said, I will plan to get the the glands repacked the next time the boat is out of the water. Based on their colour, it would appear that the bronze parts have a acquired a fa...

Re: Servicing Rudder Posts

Thanks for sharing your experience John. Pleased to hear you had no issues while the boat was in the water. Curious, roughly how long did it take to complete the job?

Re: Servicing Rudder Posts

Thanks Dwayne and Mac for your responses. I don't think the packing needs to be replaced, just adjusted, but you never know. I found an earlier thread on this topic where James Power suggested that servicing can be done in-water, provided the boat is riding sufficiently high in the stern for the mec...

Servicing Rudder Posts

One of the recommendations I received from a recent marine survey (for insurance) is to adjust the packing glands and clean up the surface corrosion on the rudder posts (there is a minor leak with both posts). While I've done this job in the past, more recently I've had it done it done professionall...

Re: Bottom paint above water line...

Makala, for what it's worth I have used ablative paint on my various boats for many years, and find that from time to time I have similar cracking of the paint. Occasionally it will be below the waterline, but usually it is at or just above the waterline. I suspect this is mostly due to imperfection...

Re: Sticky white vinyl ceilings

Dick, thanks for sharing this useful tip. We've had a very sticky and dirty patch by the side of the entry door that's been bugging me since forever. I've had no success removing it with anything else, so will definitely try this the next time we visit the boat. Hope all goes well for you and Carol....

Re: Bottom Paint

Ditto what Duetto does for the running gear, only we use the Martyr brand of zinc spray. This works well in our Pacific Northwest waters.

For bottom paint, we now use Petit Horizons. Very similar results to Micron CSC, but less expensive. One and a half gallons every two years.

Re: Sliding Door Alignment

Mac, A few years ago we also had a persistent leak that was ending up at the base of the entryway stairs. I finally determined that the entry point for the water was the base of the radar mast, where the bolts had loosened. After applying new caulking to the bolts and retightening them the leak disa...

Re: Hydraulic Ruder Aligbment

I've not kept close track of how often we need to align the rudders, but I would estimate it to be once or twice a 500-1000 mile season, perhaps more when we are travelling longer distances, such as on our trip to Alaska. We also check and top up the hydraulic fluid at least once a year.

Re: Port Hole Screens

We purchased screens for our oval stainless steel portlights from Pompanette (603-826-5791). The item number listed on the invoice was S717-SCREEN. The cost in 2015 was $10.85 each.
