Re: Sawhorse for Outboards

I bolted a short 2x4 to another that rested on the seat, spanning the open engine cover. Page 83 has no hardtop, so I can use the main halyard and the winch to raise the engine. I found the correct metric screw size to fit the three threaded holes in the flywheel, and assembled a way to connect the ...

Re: Thelma and Louise Up To No Good

Always start troubleshooting recently run outboards with fresh fuel in a clean tank and fuel line. Old fuel is lumpy. Cleaning up an older plastic tank and fuel line is just enough trouble to justify buying new. Dunk the carb body in a one gallon carb cleaner that comes with a lift out basket. Amber...

Re: Buying. Understanding ownership costs.

the very most expensive bottom paints talk about three years effectiveness, and it is the condition of your bottom paint that regulates haulouts. Some diesel inboards with saildrives need to be hauled to change the oil, annually. I think that is the case with the LRC 36's, but I hope Terry will weig...

Re: Sawhorse for Outboards

Thou shalt not store engine stands on a vessel that moves with the wind. Such things should be stored out of the way, like over the spare tire in the Wife's car. Thou shalt not purchase the sacred metal for objects that do not go to sea. Waste not, want not. Thou shalt not leave objects on the cockp...

Re: Mainsail Advise II

Dave Calvert in the Florida Keys built the sails on Page 83. He has been building racing sails for Stilettos for years, and has earned a wicked reputation on his "Bare Naked 42". But the bulk of his output has been for high performance cruising cats. He is not cheap. I spec'ed a loose foot...

Re: Inside Genoa Track

Yesterday was Gorgeous! Unfortunately I was playing soccer mom. At the risk of creating a mare's nest over the forward cabin top, a second complete set of jib sheets, track and turning blocks could save you having to go forward to rig for close hauled. I'm thinking of a lea shore situation where you...

Re: Inside Genoa Track

Crab angle is the killer. It's easy to think you are pointing quite high when you are actually mushing sideways, If you have an autohelm you can pick out the heading data on seatalk, compare it to your GPS track then come back later and factor in the current. I don't log all that data, so I take a q...

Re: Inside Genoa Track

Have you considered barber-haulers? Will some extra halyard tension pull the pocket in the main forward?

Just like a sixties era fighter plane, shoal draft keels will mush before a full stall. This might show up in your data if you are capturing CMG and magnetic heading to determine slip.

Re: Bottom paint removal

I had that much or more bottom paint removed by a soda-blaster. I then rolled on 6 thin coats of InterProtect® 2000E Barrier Coat System and two coats of ablative bottom paint. That added 10 knots to our cruise speed, I estimate.*

*Take two grains of salt and think about me in the morning....

Re: Battery Draw

Yuuup. There are several made, priced from $30 to more than $200. Go cheap, there will be more than a couple degrees difference around a leak. It handy to check the temp of the outboard engines' pee-stream, ice in the water tank, cheese on your pizza, asphalt in the tropics (so you don't step out of...

Re: Battery Draw

Just for grins, check the seal around the refrigerator door. it doesn't take much of a leak to make it work harder. One way of testing is to scan the seal with a remote temperature gage, $30 on Ebay. Develop a reefer plan to minimize the number of times you open it during the day. We kept a separate...

Re: Buying. Understanding ownership costs.

Your cruising costs will vary a bit depending on location. We found that staying out of Marinas and sailing more than motoring was a lot less expensive in the Bahamas in spite of the alarming prices of groceries and fuel. There are some very experienced old hands around who are willing to share thei...

Re: Alternative make of outboard for Altair 32

Magic Time: you should search the older message files for engine discussions. Essentially, the Yamaha 9.9s and High Thrust 8's are the optimum choices, because they are the only available engines geared to run at peak power rpm in the speed range we operate. A Honda BF20 delivers less thrust because...

Re: Pointing to windward

Short of dagger boards, nothing we do can get the PDQ 36 to point much higher, but some little things help a bit. Wind: too little and too much both hurt. The best is about 12 knots. Higher winds may let us literally point higher, but the increased sideways slippage negates any better CMG (Course Ma...
