Ray, Thanks for the heads-up on the water heater. This may solve a problem that a lot of us have been experiencing. Which Excel unit (e.g., model #) did you install?

Thanks, Ed

Try taking a hand-held magnetic compass and holding it next to your mounted compass. See if the readings are similar. Then move it side to side, at increasingly greater intervals. There may be something in your instrumentation that's creating a magnetic field. As instruments get older, resistors &am...

SSB info

If you are installing a SSB, the link below provides a good alternative to an insulated backstay antenna. It works better and is a lot cheaper. The link also provides some good info about how to enhance performance on catamarans by installing 450-ohm ladder rope as a counterpoise in each hull to sup...

It is possible to use a long shaft engine on some dinghys. I have a Caribe 10' RIB. I had an alum. extension made to raise the transom 5 inches. It fits over the original in a slot manner. This results in the prop being at the proper depth. Looks strange. sitting up high but it works. Ed

Very good idea to carry a spare. How obvious yet it never occured to me. Duh! I wonder what other obvious spares I've overlooked. Spark plugs I'm good on, plus a list of parts gleamed from all the engine problems people have had, but most of those items were not obvious thigs to take along (at least...
