Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

Hi Jim, The 3 vs. 4 blade question has been much discussed. Frankly, it remains more of an art than a science. In general terms, more blades mean: more bite, more drag - and more expensive! The cost factor may be one reason that PDQ's were equipped with 3-bladers. But there are many factors to cons...

Re: MV 34 - 4 blade props

OK, our four bladed props are on - and we love them! The boat runs noticeably smoother - PLUS, we have gained over a knot in speed! I've just published the test results on SnoDogLog on the Performance page: www.snodoglog.com/Performance.html. Check it out, we now have a 20-knot powercat! Henry www....

Image Here they are!
After placing the order with Dick back in December, we finally received our new four-bladed propellers! Hoping to install them soon. Will let you know the results. Stay tuned...

Re: Stiff Upper Helm Controls

Success! I installed the new cables and the controls now work very freely. Yeah! The new cables went in without problem using the pull cords. The sharp bend over the port cabin door has been reduced slightly. The fly-bridge controls now work better than when the boat was new. Merry Christmas to all...

Re: Stiff Upper Helm Controls

Hi Sandy,

I've just been using Shell Rotella T 15-w-40. Since the boat never sees extreme temperatures, I haven't felt the need to use synthetic oil.

Regards,

Stiff Upper Helm Controls

Although we've had very few mechanical problems with Sno' Dog , one minor annoyance has been the stiffness of the fly-bridge engine controls. Strangely, the lower helm controls operate freely even though they drag the upper controls with them - it doesn't seem logical! Right now, I'm in the process...

Re: Single Handing?

I have done quite a bit of single-handing on Sno' Dog and it has always gone reasonably well. Underway, I use the autopilot with a handheld remote so I can move freely about the boat. Docking requires some planning. I put fenders at the extreme bow & stern and I set out docking lines fore &...

Re: Charter Possibities

A note in the Charter News & Notes section of the August issue of Motor Boating caught my eye: "Canadian Yacht Charters (CYC) has recently made an addition to their fleet of 7 powerboats. A brand new 2010 model year, 34-foot PDQ powercat was delivered in June." Who knew there was such...

Re: PDQ work tour 2009

James, Remember those stiff throttles you noted on Sno' Dog last summer? We still got 'em. Boat is presently in Jensen Beach just north of Stuart, I'd be delighted if you could stop by and take a look if you're down this way. We'll be here until the end of January, then likely in the Bahamas in Feb...

Re: Does Shallow Water Slow You Down?

Yes, Sandy, we have definitely noticed this effect. Passing through the Dismal Swamp Canal, it was very noticeable, and cruising on the canals in Holland where the water was less than 6 feet deep we noticed the same thing. In fact, the effect works quite well (if you're paying attention) to warn yo...

Re: water pump removal

It's hard to believe they built it that way! I learned of it this winter at the Mastry diesel workshop - where they were offering to sell aftermarket engine brakets that would allow for the pump removal. When I inquired as to how people did it without the new bracket, Tino (Mastry) said, "Oh y...

Re: saving fuel by going slow?

OK guys, here's the scoop... Being an engineer and all, I decided to gather up all my info and combine it with data from Yanmar and Powerboat Reports to create a table of speed vs mileage for our Sno' Dog . The complete table can now be seen at: http://www.snodoglog.com/Performance.html. Even more ...

Re: saving fuel by going slow?

Fuel economy at speed was a major factor in our choice of a powercat - and the PDQ 34 in particular. Now that we've had Sno' Dog for a couple of years, we've collected a bunch of our own data. (Much of this can be found on our website on the "Performance" page: http://www.snodoglog.com/Pe...

Re: Rough Water Photo

Having put over 7000 miles under our keels, we have seen our share of rough weather. I agree, the boat will, no doubt, take more than its occupants! It's hard to take pictures when you're aboard the boat, and you're not likely to have a photo-boat out there in those conditions. But, if you peruse o...

Re: Nova Kool Fridge - low voltage cut-out

John, It's not as bad as you think! To remove the fridge, you just have to remove the four screws around the outside frame - they're hidden under little plastic caps that must be popped off. Then, the whole fridge should slide right out. We put some towels on the counters and rested it there. (See ...
