Re: Bilge Alarms & Pumps

a couple of years back passagemaker magazine did an in depth on bilge pumps and got into how much water comes in thru different size holes. it's a huge amount. anyone contemplating this kind of project should try to get a copy. on another note, we saw a "cigarette" boat that hit a sand bar...

Re: Time for a new Anchor light bulb.

hi sandy, on our pdq we replaced entire unit with a photocell/led, but on our mainship we just installed an led bulb which we got from defender (approx $40). it was just a simple bulb replacement. they do have different connection bases, so you'll need to match. back to the pdq, i just used a short ...

Re: Racor Filters

hi all, this topic has been discussed on this forum for years. racor filter flow is a function of the filter model (ie. 500 series). assuming new filters a 2M and a 10M will flow the same, this is according to racor doc. as someone pointed out the 2M will clog sooner, reducing flow and needs to be c...

Re: New Jersey ICW

hi billp, we've done all or part of the nj icw about 4 times. lower part is shallow in spots but our take is if you watch the channel and consult skipper bob it is easily doable. we have done in many tide heights. one thisng is to be avoided is if you have strong (25+) easterly or westerly. it can b...

Re: Prop Zincs

hi chet, welcome aboard. the powercat uses a "sailboat-like" propnut zinc. the propeller nut looks like a "dunce" hat with a threaded hole which accepts an allen bolt. this bolt holds the zinc to the nut. the zincs are size D. we've ordered ours from boatzincs.com but you can get...

Re: Cutlass Bearing Replacement

hi sandy, when to replace them will depend on play where the prop shaft exits the stern tube. i think i remember seeing .075" in pdq manual, but check on that. wear is exacerbated by operating in shallow water with sand, getting line wrapped on shaft, etc. we've replaced ours and teamwork has r...

Re: Shaft Coupling?

hi james,

thanks for the reply. so is it safe to say, minus corrosion, it should slide off fairly easily?

Shaft Coupling?

hi all, (although i think this is aimed at james power) we're going to be removing and replacing the shaft coupling with the boat in the water. i think i know how to remove (worst case), but i'm unsure on how to get it back in place. should it slide easily? does the key get installed first? any tips...

Re: whale plumbing fitting?

hi james, i tried this project today. as recommended, i pushed the collar toward the fitting and then quickly tried to withdraw the pipe. no luck. the pipe did move in toward the fitting but would not release. any other suggestions? i have another project which will require disconnecting the plumbin...

Re: access to bilges?

hi bill,

no, i use the "tub" to refer to the recesses below the floor boards in the state rooms, galley, and on the head side center. we have a 2003 w/o the split head.

i'll be drilling a hole over the next couple of weeks, and i'll post results.

Re: access to bilges?

hi john,

i assume that you used the vacuum technique and that the water pooled under the "tub" in the stateroom?

Re: access to bilges?

hi ron,

only access we have is on the starboard side way forward and that's dry. my guess it's under one of the "bathtubs" either in the staterooms or at the bottom of the steps. i'd just like to hear somebody confirm that before i start cutting.

access to bilges?

hi all, we have accumulated some water in the bilges. i know because when we go to get up on plane it runs aft. when we stop/idle, it runs forward, not to be seen. there isn't enough water to activate the pumps but it's still quite a bit. i don't like the idea of going into the engine room while run...
