First and second Anchors

For our MV34 hull #33, we have a 35lb Delta primary and a F-16 Fortress secondary anchor. Have used the Fortress only once. We like it because it is light, relatively easy to handle, and stores easily in the port bow locker, assembled with rode attached. The Delta (not to be confused with the Kingst...

Yes, catamarans pound. The bridgedeck makes it inevitable. (I suppose a trampoline forward would reduce foredeck pounding but perhaps at the expense of increasing windshield pounding!) Also, by watching the deck bounce at the base of our MV34 dinette table, I know there is pounding further aft as we...

We use mostly 35 foot, 1/2 inch diameter for tying up. 25 footers would probably do in most instances, but we like the extra as it allows flexibility to meet inconvenient dock cleat placements, rafting to bigger boats, or extra wraps around a timber where there are no cleats. Also consider that you ...

Yanmar Oil Change

Thanks Larry and Sharon. One useful tip that someone (forgot who) told me is to loosen the filter so you can turn it with your fingers. Then make a small hole at the top of the filter with a drill, an awl, or most any pointed object - easy to do for most filters. Then rotate the filter 180 degrees s...

Prop zincs

Brian: When Gadzooks reached Vancouver on the freighter (my first opportunity to see the hulls out of the water), I found both prop zincs had gone missing somewhere between Whitby and Port Everglades. Both sleeves were still there - I'm assuming that the little cage-like thingamajig the zinc attache...

Aquadrive

Bob: You may be interested in the below from John at PDQ. He has been very helpful in providing info necessary for me to consider retrofitting the Aquadrive on Gadzooks! I have just about decided not to do that, tho the Soundown tiles sound easy and perhaps helpful. Also see http://www.leviathanmari...

Insurance rates

Boat US just hit us with a 20% increase (effective Dec 04) in insurance based on "...increased losses in your area." We are in Washington state, and not subject to hurricanes. I know of nothing in this area that would justify such a drastic increase. Has any MV34 owner had a similar expeie...

We use a Aquapro 9' rigid inflateable. It is nicely made and the hull is aluminum. It fits nicely between the hulls on the PDQ-supplied davits. It is also lightweight - around 70 lbs, I think. With our 5 hp Nissan 2-stroke, it planes easily with one 200 pounder aboard. It does not plane with two. It...

Yanmar Oil Capacity

I change oil using a vacuum pump arrangement that sucks oil out through the dipstick tube. It seems to work OK - done with the oil thoroughly warmed. But the Yanmar 4JH3 manual seems to indicate a 6-7 liter capacity, and I never get that much out - falling short by perhaps a liter or two. What's wro...

courtesy lights

We installed a West Marine "spreader light" on the radar mast. It illuminates the flybridge and rear deck strongly - very useful for use of the transom stairs. It also provides a useful amount of light for the side decks - strongest at the aft end, of course. Would also be good for night o...

Yanmar coolant system

Early on, after taking delivery of our MV34, we noticed small quantities of antifreeze below the engines. Eventually, we had to remove coolant several times from the plastic reservoirs as they filled to overflowing. Upon return from our Alaska cruise this summer, we had it looked at by a Yanmar deal...
