Re: Oil consumption for Yanmar engines
I was told by several reliable folks that when they first got the boat, they were topping off to the upper mark on the dipstick and were dismayed at the high oil loss rate. They claim that by filling beyond halfway on the stick, the "excess" oil is rather quickly lost, but the consumption ...

Re: Oil consumption for Yanmar engines
I have polled a number of owners and heard numbers from one quart every 100 hours to one every 15. Obviously, the latter one has a yet-undiagnosed problem. If an engine was otherwise running well, I would not get too excited about anything over 50 hours, but that's just my opinion. When you say &quo...

Yes, you would always need to upgrade both the pos and neg wires.

Re: Cabinet Storage?
My admiral purchased cloth boxes from Walmart that are used to store seasonal plates and bowls of various sizes (like Christmas dishes, etc.) These have clear plastic windows and stack nicely in the larger lockers to segregate stuff like bathing suits, shorts, T-shirts. etc. I think there might even...

Re: Cabinet Storage?
No, Mac. We feel we have plenty of stowage as it is and there are many other things on the boat that take my time and money.
I would not blame you if you wanted to do it, but we have no plans for it. Good luck if you do!

Re: Cabinet Storage?
Ours is the same, but we put trays on the top shelf for all sorts of little stuff we use frequently. We also removed the lower bottle separator so we could get more in. As long a you keep the space full with bottles, they cannot move around enough to break.

Re: Fresh Water water flow PDQ 34
Curious about the "air purge valve" on the water filter. I don't recall my older Shurflo having one and it has never been an issue. Wouldn't any air introduced during a filter cartridge change just vent up the tube into the tank? Now, the very rounded wheel you have to use to put it in byp...

Re: wiper arms?
If I recall, there are two set screws on the wiper arm. With both removed, I tried many things to get the arms off for replacement with no success. I finally used a Dremel cut-off wheel to carefully saw a cut through the arm parallel to the splined shaft. before cutting too deeply and scoring the sh...

Re: What is the best Freshwater prump for PDQs
I liked the Shurflo Smart pumps because they were quiet, but I had two fail in too brief a time. I now use cheaper Jabsco pumps that are much noisier, but I can replace them for half the price. It helps to have an accumulator in the plumbing to maintain the pressure rather than have the pump cycle r...

Re: Engine Raw water intake strainer
I think another consideration is if you need (or choose) to be moving with only one engine running. You don't want the motion through the water to push enough water in to fill the water-lift muffler and possibly flood the engine. So, the idea of facing the strainer to act as a "ram" may no...

Re: New Owner Questions
David, I get stiff steering if the hydraulic fluid is a little low. Fill from the upper helm only with the autopilot off. Stiff steering at higher speed can be due to misaligned rudders. I assume you were instructed how to align them. If you have a leak of waste water in the starboard locker, it sho...

Re: storage under port seats opposite the lower helm?
George,
Our hull 91 has a lot of locker space under that seat, accessible from the port cabin. I have not double-checked if every inch is being used, but I suspect most of it is. It certainly could be different on your older boat.
The email I have for James is: james_power@rogers.com

Re: novacool fridge
FYI - Some of the numerous wire sizing charts available are adjusted to use a ONE-WAY distance from the source to the device. Some do not make it clear that the wiring run length is TWO-WAY (from the source TO the device, and BACK to the source). It is important to know which run length to use for y...

Re: novacool fridge
Thanks, Duetto.
On our previous boat, the fridge worked poorly when the battery voltage was less than 12.5 because of undersize wiring and the subsequent voltage drop. I have not checked the voltage at the compressor when running on this one yet, but really should.

Bill,
I have not always been happy with all Jabsco products, but our toilet and macerator has worked well for us and was easy to fix when the joker valve eventually got crudded up.
