Re: Replacing original solar panels

Standard sizes have changed. Additionally, I'm sure the original controller was PM rather than MPPT and thus is obsolete. This field has move far in the past decade. You probably just need to start over. Not a big deal. I consider the specific equipment I installed ~ 8 years ago obsolete in terms of...

Re: PDQ 36 Free Rudder

There is 36 on the hard in Deale MD missing a rudder. Next time I'm there I'll have to see who it is.

"To the Max," maybe?

Re: Project report- Spinnaker furler

re. Chicago cat: I've known a lot of people that pull the bridles and sheets off every time to save UV damage. I don't think that makes sense and it certainly reduces chute usage. My bridle was very similar to yours, sans furler. I used a squeezer instead. The PO had mounted a pair of U-bolts near t...

Re: What are these D-rings on the bow?

The trick to using chutes and A-sails more is to leave the rigging in place. Sheets and bridles stay rigged. Sure, they see more sun, but if you keep them in the locker and don't use them, what's the point? Leave the rigging in place. That done, it should only take a few minutes to connect head, tack...

Re: Air Conditioning Intake

Honestly, you better measure your boat. They vary a little and the fit will be tight. In my case, I trimmed the opening a little. Additionally, You need to work out where the ducts are going to run before you settle on a location. That is actually by FAR the most difficult part of the job IMO. * Fir...

Re: What are these D-rings on the bow?

Never seen them. However, since they are pointing forward (not inwards) I suspect mooring. Why there would be 2 I have no idea. Also, are there any fittings that suggest a sprit or spinnaker pole was used? Yes, a genoa will give you considerably more speed and higher pointing, and a chute is fun and...

Re: Fridge Trouble

There is no compressor; this is a propane fridge. It is based on an absorption cycle, not freon compression. http://www.lpappliances.com/images/gasabs.jpg Yes, the lack of fan will stop cooling. It also helps to keep the port forward hatch cracked. You will need to replace the fans. I recall they ar...

Re: Fuel tank

More details. You need to trace out the vent hose path. Since this is a gasoline vent, it needs to be right. The tank is almost certainly polyethylene. Yes, it sounds like there is a low spot in the hose. Yes, the vent outlet is probably below the tank (this is good because it keeps water out), but ...

Re: Rear cockpit enclosure for PDQ 32?

Re. side curtains, this is the only image I could find. It was raining pretty hard. They attached to sail slugs in a track at the top and were secured with elastic and hooks to pad eyes at the bottom. When not in use they were pulled forward and secured to the pose with Velcro straps. I'm sure the d...

Re: What an old PDQ 32 sailor is up to

I wore my dry suit more, but in fact, this was only a few weeks later. I've always been a cold weather person (look at my avitar). Rain is more of a nuisance than cold. https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4wHhxXie2nk/WmUM1igSBpI/AAAAAAAAOb8/bptOWD6CLYQxgM_4iXzsUYPZtXmeXjLBgCLcBGAs/s640/jan%2B21%2Bsolo%2B1.jpg

Re: PDQ 36 Rudders

Yes, I would routinely get a small amount of rainwater on the starboard side from rainwater. Only a few gallons per year, so I just bailed with a cup. Odd that they designed it so that the locker drained into the hulls. Makes it a pain to hose it out clean. I only did it twice.

The computer averages the course over a few minutes, even when the wheel is not engaged, if the unit is on. Does this happen when you are going straight for several minutes, or only when engaging after turning onto the course?

^^ That is about the same as my impression on the mods. * Keel extensions. To me, the big help was smooth tacking, less risk of irons, and good speed through the tack. Also pointing higher. * Transom extensions. Not as time consuming as it might seem. Really only two full days of work, plus some 1- ...

Re: Rear cockpit enclosure for PDQ 32?

I considered it, but quickly realized that an enclosure would convert it into a non-sailboat, and that was not my interest. Too much agility is lost for serious consideration. You won't be using a genoa or spinnaker, and the mainsheet and jib sheet are going have to share a winch. I also don't like ...
