Cables: Red jacket and Supreme interchangable?

Post by thinwater »

I'm replacing all 4 cables and the Morse MT-3 control (ouch). The control exploded inside, one cable cracked, and the others are old.

The original seems to be Teleflex 33C red jacket (8' and 11' I'm told). However, WM doesn't seem to stock 8'. Also, it seems the Telefelx Extream 3300CC is the upgraded version. Is it interchangable? The shorter bend radius seems like a plus.

It seems installation should be a fairly simple matter of making a double female fitting and getting a helper to give a push-pull. Of course, I'm sure there is some strugle. Any other tips not found in the archives?Does lubing the outside make any sense with something like K-Y or soap make any sense, or is it only the ends that hang up?

I have changed the cables on my 36 and it was very simple, not sure if the run on the 32 is harder but I suspect not. The MT-3 is another story, I tried to rebuild mine with marginal success. Still have issues with the cam studs on the throttle arms hitting each other in the push to open configuration required for the new motors. I switched to the Extremes and did not see an issue, however, I would contact Jim Corday at Teleflex Support for an official answer.

Thanks.

Yes, I had the same problem on the MT-3, plus some other wear issues on one side. I tried some fixes but have now decided new engines, new control systems, rather than a prolonged battle.

Don't we all wish the machinery was as straight forward as the sails and rigging.

Are you going with a new MT-3, a different Morse control, or switching over to the Yamaha control?

Piece of cake. The whole job took about 1 1/2 hours, including a (brief) lunch break.
