Need input on PDQ 34 & 36 models.

Posted by Don Byrd on December 27, 2000 at 15:14:00:

Hello. my 1st mate and I are in the market for a used PDQ. Have been driving all
up
and down east coast for last 3-4 months looking. Just returned from a 3,206 mile
trip to
Florida where we cover both coast and the panhandle and are now back in Va

Since PDQ is in process of moving to their new location and are a bit dissrupted
right now
have not tried to contact them

At present our choices are a '91 PDQ 34' which is like new (hull #2 I was
told?), a '92 PDQ
36' which is fair but appears to have had a water leak inside, behing where
outside
steering is located (teak & holly deck has a 12" section that is damaged). Our
3rd
choice is a '97 PDQ 36' the anniversary edition. Needlless to say that is our
1st choice,
BUT the price is $40-50k more than we want to spend (we are thinking of still
making a
low bid and it can either be accepted or declined, in which case we will go with
the '92 or
'91

Any input on these early models would be greatly appreciated. Also any input on
the
cost of hard tops and s/s bow pulpits. O'yes all 3 above cats are the outboard
models

Thanks in advance for any input.. Don & Linda.

PS. we are both long time monohull sailors and liveaboards, Linda having a Irwin
37'
and me a Endeavour 37'

Don;
I own Oceania (hull#9). She start life as a 34 and I converted her to a 36 in
1997. As a 34 she was always stern heavy. As your speed increased the sterns
would duck under increasing resistance. Top speed as a 34 was 11 to 12 knots

After the conversion, the extra flotation in the stern leveled the boat at
speed. The top speed also increased to 16 knots

Oceania also had the same leak as the 92 you inspected. I repaired the leak by
recaulking the helm station. The damaged floor is only teak and holly plywood

The replacement is not a big job

Select a 36, they sail better

I recently went through buying a used PDQ, and I definately recommend the 36 if
you can afford it especially for living on board. You can add a hardtop to the
36, but you can not retrofit it with the taveller. On my 1998, the traveller is
on the rear rail and not on the hardtop. You cannot retrofit a hardtop capable
of handling the pressure of a traveller

Needless to say, the 1997 would be best, especially for resale. I know the 1992
you are looking a. The asking price I beleive is $150,000. It has been on the
market for 2 years, and not sailed for 3 years, and the owner has since passed
away. You should be able to get that one for $100,000 to $110,000, I would not
pay any more for it. And since its being sold by an experienced PDQ dealer, you
should be able to get leaks etc fixed as part of the deal. Hope that helps. The
only feature I would like on my 1998 is the tall mast version for better
performance, but for that you need a 1999, or later. Good luck, I would be glad
to answer any other questions. Don't get stuck with a Gemini.
