Possible Delamination Found-Myth BUSTED!

Edit Jun 30: Take a look. Having consulted learned folk, I think this is NOT a delamination, but simply the box structure of the salon floor. Perhaps I should delete this entire thread. If you have an opinion regarding this, let me know. Thanks for your support. jm

This is a 2000 PDQ36 Classic.

The surveyor tapped out a large section of the bottom of the bridgedeck. It is outlined in the pix with painter's tape. It seemed peculiar to me that it was a perfect rectangle. Is this a normal situation? See lower resolution pix a few posts down below. They don't require navigation to see the pattern clearly.

You can also see a small area outlined in front of the starboard engine pod that was wet.

I've talked about this boat in other threads. The PO was the original owner. He disassembled much of the interior and exterior last year. He took all the stuff home for unknown reasons. He passed away. In late winter, early spring, the boat was put back together. It is still being put back together.

One of my first thoughts about this boat was that it is being put back together, with few exceptions, without addressing the unknown reasons the PO had in mind.

There are other concerns, but this large area seemed most important.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Joe Mc

Just a little more.

I was there for the survey and watched and listened as this area was tapped out. Solid as a rock all around the rectangle. The surveyor had me go inside and walk back and forth on the sole between the salon table and the cockpit. I stepped heavily and I'm about 220. He saw deflection.

Here are the same pix resized. The high res of the previous pix is probably not needed.

Is it truly de-laminated or is it a crack along the lines you describe? Is there evidence of a repair? What does the surveyor say?

Unfortunately, I won't have the results documented by the surveyor until Tuesday.

This is what I remember from our discussion.

There are no cracks. There is no evidence of a repair in this area. The difference between tapping outside the marked area and inside was like the difference between concrete and drywall. I wondered if it was akin to the structure of an airplane wing. The leading and trailing edges are tough and less flexible, but in between is just the right amount of strength and weight to accomplish the mission. So, it may be hollow, or ribbed in some way, but it keeps the sea out and the passengers in. It did seem odd that it would delam in a perfect rectangle.

Does this help?

Hey Nautibits,

From the pictures it looks like the suspect area corresponds with the teak and holly cabin sole in the main cabin. Call me tomorrow and we can discuss.

You must be very relieved! Many of us were following this and are also relieved! James definitely knows his stuff. All the best, and enjoy your PDQ.

Hi! Thanks for the reply. I'm not quite an owner yet though. The due diligence thing is a black hole, but necessary. For example, while I was in a tizzy over this huge rectangle, I spotted and shot the pic of the corroded hole in the crossbeam. Then I pigeon-holed the crossbeam issue while I was trying to find out about the possible delam issue. Imminent threat versus unknown threat. Now, with the rectangle moved into the acceptable range, the crossbeam is in the cross-hairs.

I've noticed a significant amount of traffic. I am very thankful for the replys, both public and private.
