Outboard Motor Bracket for 36

Posted by Ron McDaniel on August 04, 2002 at 10:14:00:

Has anyone hung an outboard motor on a 36 that has the factory seat and davits?
After reading some of the comments earlier in the year, I've decided to try and
hang my 8 HP Yamaha instead of leaving it on the dingy.

Hi Ron: We mounted an Edison outboard bracket on the stbd aft rail. It's double
mounted to two rails and very sturdy. We mount our 15hp Yamaha ob on the inboard
side for local sailing(so as not to leave it on a piling while docking). When we
go offshore I mount the ob mtr on the ouside of the rail. Never leave it on the
transom of a dinghy, they're not made to support the dead wgt. Jack Coulter

I bought the Edson motor mount, but it appears that using the davit tackle to
lift the motor entails construction of railing for the mount. Something in the
corner of the transom and one of the hulls perhaps. Also, why not leave the
motor on the dinghy and lift using a heavy duty webbing on the motor instead of
lifting at the transom? That way the the dinghy is held by the motor rather than
vice versa. (My dink weighs 85 lbs.)
