Smoke / Carbon Monoxide Detector Mounting Locations?

Post by MikeH »

Any suggestions on mounting locations for smoke / carbon monoxide detectors ?

I was planning on mounting them in the staterooms, outboard side, near the ceiling, using double-sided "alien tape" ... but I see that a former owner had them mounted inside the engine compartments, aft of the engines, next to the battery.

Update -

Don't forget that the little green LED light flashes every 60 seconds, which can be a little distracting in the middle of the night. I moved the detector in the owner's stateroom to the ceiling next to the light, by the door. we'll see how well the headliner handles it. This helps considerably for those who sleep with their head at the inboard side.

Also, I found out that heavy fog will set off the CO Alarm.

My understanding that the best location for this kind of detector is down low near the floor because CO is heavier than air. We mount ours down low behind the two berth doors.

Thanks Mac ! That is also what I had always thought ... which is why the directions threw me for a loop. It showed wall mounting location at least 4 inches below the ceiling, or ceiling mount away from the corners of the room. I googled around and it looks like the latest take on CO is that it mixes rapidly with the air, but who knows ??
