Diana and I have used different oil changing pumps over the years and have never been happy with them.

This includes the pump it up cans that create a vacuum and the 12v clamp to the battery and run a hose down the dipstick varieties.

Always more time and more mess than seems reasonable.

Any recommendations?

It's a dirty job. All you can do is make it as easy as possible, and remember, we are lucky; there a re a lot of saildrives out there that can only be serviced OUT OF THE WATER.

Warm up the oil first. It takes a third the time and effort of pumping cold oil. Tuck an oil absorber cloth under the filter and put a baggy over it when you pull it off. The baggy should be big enough to hold the filter and the oil cloth. I find it easier to hoist the engine a foot or so, leaving the control cables and wiring attached, then setting it down over a 2 X 4 across the opening to hold the motor while I work around it. I do this for fogging the engine too. shooting that little red straw into the cylinder is a supreme pita.

on our mv34 we use the big talljug with manualpump/siphon. it's ok....barely.

we have another boat which has the reverso system. easy but $$$$$.

Pumping the oil out isn't bad with a vacuum pump. Larry installed a male hose adapter on the engine and the hose to the pump screws on that and on the other end of the pump so he doesn't have to empty it each time. We keep it in a dish pan with an oil absorbent pad and store it up front in the shallow compartment. The messy part is getting the filter off the 75hp engines without getting oil all over the bottom of engine compartment. Larry has finally figured out that if he puts a biiig garbage bag under the filter and has the new filter ready to go on, he can do the change with little spill. He has even done it without spilling any oil (except into the bag)!
I hate oil change days.

Another way to decrease the amount of oil spill when removing the filter is to loosen the filter very slightly (so that you can turn it by hand), tap a hole in the top of the filter with an awl or small sharp screwdriver, put a baggy around it, turn it so the hole is down, and let the oil drain from the filter into the baggy. Then when you completely unscrew the filter, with or without the baggy still around it (it's very slippery at this point), there will be very little oil left to spill.

I like it. The drippy goop is already in the bag with the filter.

BioSocks in the engine drip pan are OK, and likely gobble up the oils and metal oxides, but controlling the mess at the edge of the engine block is my kinda solution.

thank you larry! this is the first filter change since i read larry's suggestion of a large garbage bag down in the bilge. did both filters w/o spilling a drop. in the past i had used ziplocs but inevitably the oily filter touched the outside of bag and/or dripped in the bilge. this is truly a break-thru.

I use a reverso pump. A 1/2 in hose will fit exactly over the dipstick tube. That eliminates the small messy hose down the dipstick tube. Mack Boring said that the dipstick tube was designed for this.
