Cracked Lifeline Stanchions

Post by lgeller »

While inspecting the boat following our big Bahamas Trip, I noticed small cracks in three of the lifeline stanchions. A local welder suggested that I should remove the full rail and bring it to his shop. His plan is to cut the stanchion at the cracks, insert a pipe inside for strength, then re-weld and polish.

Photos of the cracks have been uploaded.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dont know if you are the original owner or not. I checked my stanchions and they look fine.

I am the second owner of my boat. When I purchase it there was a foot long chunk on the bottom half of the toe rail about midships. I would wager there was an interesting oops tale that would go with that booboo. If you are the second owner I would guess that the stanchions got bent and straightened.

Fortunately they are somewhat easy to remove and get welded.
