Found a dealer in central coastal Fl. 772-985-5821. Super nice folks. Lifetime guarantee on their screens. Office # 561-324-2444. probably better #, the other is his cell. Roger on Teamwork

It seems like the subject of the Phantom Screens is scattered over many topics. I will post here to thank previous posters for the lead on the Phantom Screens.

Our door screen would not retract properly, so I disassembled it to find one end of the roller rusted and the tab broken off. After 11 years in a salty environment, I was not too distressed.

I contacted the FL rep for the screens and was surprised to find that a tech comes out to measure, they make the custom screen, and then the tech installs it. It sure doesn't seem like you need a tech to install the screen, but at least that labor is built into the price ($399). They now recommend a latch, rather than the magnet. I can see where that might be best.

I will try to let you know how it all turns out in a few weeks.

This summer, we plan to have the forward hatch/window screen replaced, as well as the door screen. Has anyone priced the forward window replacement so we will know what to expect, generally? Duane, how did the door screen replacement go with the new latch?

Kent,

The screen door replacement just happened a few days ago after a not very good experience with their office staff losing my order and other particulars - twice! Anyway, the screen is essentially exactly the same as before, but the new latch is mechanical, with rods that spring into the locked position top and bottom. The latch is a thumb release at the door handle that pulls the rods out. So far, we like it.

Definitely want to recommend the same Phantom Screen rep Roger used, Joe @(561)324-2444, who covers Florida's central east coast. While you need an appointment 2 - 4 weeks in advance, he did a great job, even coming out to a mooring at Vero Beach City Marina. For ONLY $85/per unit (door and/or front window), he will replace the mesh and any & every part to make it like new! There is NO additional service, trip or mileage charge. Even insisted on replacing the rusted plate the magnet sticks to. Due to their lifetime warranty, they will replace ANY part needed (except the mesh) and will even replace the entire unit if not repairable for the same $85!

If in another area, check their pricing first. In CT the rep wanted almost 3x as much.
If a rep charges you for a whole new unit, I would check with Phantom Screens corporate as this is covered forever - even on a boat.

One tip on the front window: They are set up from the factory to act like a roller shade - jerk down to release & you can also have it stop part way. But unless you want the ability to leave it down part way, he simply repositions a piece on the roller & it works MUCH easier - doesn't hesitate when trying to retract & doesn't get stuck 1/2 way.

UPDATE: Don't use the finer (no-see-um) mesh on the front window. Unfortunately gusting winds tend to let the edges pop out of the track...

Does anyone have a 2005 PDQ nearby and can measure the width of the Phantom screen in the forward window? We are working with a Phantom screen dealer in Jacksonville Beach to order replacement screen. Our boat is there. We are not anywhere near. I assume the width is the width, no matter the year, but you never know for sure. Thanks for any help you can give.

Our boat, Hull 34/114, did not come with a phantom screen on the front middle window. I am not sure if PDQ simply didn't install one, I was told that there was a switch in window manufacturers & it was not feasible due to configuration or if it was a casualty of their impending Bankruptcy. I was told they would send me a check when I asked about it when I left the factory, but alais, the BK put an end to that promise, and several others.

My question is directed to owners of the last few boats out of Whitby, do you have forward window screens and if so, who manufactured your windows.

Thx

If they are only replacing the screen (they call it the mesh), you shouldn't need the measurements. When ours was replaced, they just had "blank" meshes they cut down in width & length to match.

I'll call the central Florida dealer today. The scheduler for the Jax Beach Phantom dealer has thrown out obstacle after obstacle and just doesn't want our business. The fact that the mesh can be cut to fit seals it. (It started when she told me they weren't Phantom screens; the name was clearly on the latch area.) Thank you all for the measurements and information.

The aft screen on our 2004 PDQ 34 #41 had a problem that it was sometimes tilting sideways a little and jamming while opening or closing. I called Phantom Screens and got American Screen Solutions in Boynton Beach, FL. I said it looked like the plastic ends on the slider bar were worn so that the bar can tilt and jam. They told me they would replace the parts for free since the door has a lifetime warranty! And, better, their tech was in Key West and could come by our boat on his way home the next day (we are in Marathon in the Keys for the winter) and deliver the parts, but for an $85 minimum service charge he could install them. The tech, Daen Caggiano, installed the slider end parts, replaced the screen mesh and replaced the magnet and its rusty plate, for no extra charge, and gave me a can of silicone spray for the track! Outstanding service! The office # is 561-721-1800 and Dean's cell is 561-703-4405 and he has worked for them for 20 years. Doug Kerr
