Fuel Tank Pickups

Post by lgeller »

We have been having some fuel problems on PLUSH TOY and now suspect that we are getting some air in through the fuel pickup lines. These seem to have deteriorated after some GASOLINE was put into the tanks about a year ago. While it was only 20 gallons, and we were able to pump most of it out and seriously dilute what got in, the pickup lines are showing some wear.

Does anyone know where we can source new pickup tubes and fittings? We want to replace all just to be safe.

Thank you and happy holidays.

I wish I could help, but having been married for over 22 years, I haven't used any pickup lines.

^^ Grr!

Seriously, re-sealing the thread joints with Teflon should take only a few minutes. The only thing the gasoline might have done is broken the seal between he plastic tube in the 90, depending on the sealant used. Just pull it out, clean it up with xylene and allow to dry for several days. Then glue it back in with RTV Silicone, which will resist diesel just fine. Most epoxies, including West Systems, are gasoline-proof. Nothing to it. They probably used something that was not gasoline resistant, which is rather dumb. Better to figure out what the gasoline damaged and fix that, so that next time a mistake happens there is no problem.

I doubt this is off the shelf, and it's good to know your equipment. This is the sort of thing it is good to be able to fix underway.

Hey Larry,

From discoloration it looks like the pick up tube has seen better days. It wouldn't be a surprise if the gasoline of today has attacked the plastic. If you look at the top of the tank there is a plaque with the particulars of the tank, as well as the name of the company that manufactured it. If memory serves it is in Quebec Canada and their web page has an English section. Had a pick up tube issue on a PDQ 41 last summer and a replacement solved all ills.

Also, there is no sealant at the tube to tank fitting joint, just a pressure fit. When screwing the aluminum 90 elbow into the tank boss, use diesel grade pipe dope to prevent galling. The manufacturer may have additional suggestions as well.
