Propane Tank replacements

Read earlier thread. Fiberglass tank that fit is out of biz. Is there a close fit somewhere in aluminum? Powder coated? I found an aluminum tank that is 16.4 tall and 10.375 in diameter, cost $177 + frt. I couldn't fit a stick 16.375 tall in locker, missing the raised portions of the floor.

Afraid base of tank may overlap raised areas of floor, also considering having a machine shop modify top, but afraid of messing up certification. Any slick ideas?

Thanks John Knee Deep PDQ34 #57

I just bought two fiberglass 17 lb capacity propane tanks on closeout from Defender.com two weeks ago, $110 each. They fit in the locker fine. Empty weight is 10.2 lbs each, vs 9.3 lbs for the original 10 lb aluminum tanks. Best of all, the tank sides are translucent and you can see the propane Level with a good light. They are made in Norway.

What is the brand of the fiberglass tanks you bought? If possible do you have the Defender item number or model number of the tanks.

Thanks,

Defender item 400468 from their catalog, $139, but the closeout ones ($110) may have another number. Manufacturer number is 1420-0017 for the 17 lb. There's also an 11 lb model, 1420-0011. I don't have the manuf name, the tanks are on the boat.

Just go to Defender.com and search "LPG tanks".

Hi Folks...beware some of the older PDQ34's did not have a moulded fiberglass compartment for the LP tanks. (so almost any tank size will fit) The newer boats that have the moulded compartment is a bit of a problem as it was made to hold Canadian made tanks that are slightly smaller in diameter that all the American made tanks. The Canadian company is no longer in business so identical replacement tanks are not available. So....all effort should be made to prolong the life of the tanks that came with the boat. Recertification is possible but the tanks must look like new otherwise some places will not certify the older tanks.
