Original LPG tanks

Post by DickTuschick »

Hi Folks,
Another quick informational update....
As you know our LPG tanks are getting old and many places will not fill them until they are re-certified.
These tanks are unique in size and were made in Canada by a company that is now out of business.
There are no identical replacement tanks available.
For newer 34's with the moulded fiberglass PLG locker, the aft most space is exactly 10" by 16" and no American made 10 or 11 LB tank will fit in that space.
A 5 LB tank will fit in that space.
A Worthington 11lb tank will just fit IF you trim the upper hand hold AND the lower lip that the tank sits on. This brings the height down to just 16".
A better alternative is to re-certify the old tanks which is possible. When doing the re-cert most places will require that you replace the valve. The valve that is in the tank is no longer made but the valve that fits in the Worthington 11lb tank (with a 3.6" shut off arm) works just fine in our old tanks.
For anyone in the Stuart area, FerrellGas on A1A will do the re-cert with new valve and fill the tank for a total of $62.
They just did a number of tanks for us and they are a nice company to work with.

We just went through this last fall when attempting to refill our “expired” tanks -

Another option if in the Vero Beach area: I would recommend Como Oil & Propane. They re-certified (with an official receipt & decals on the tanks) AND filled both tanks for only $27.00 - I was pleasantly surprised!

For what it’s worth ... his personal opinion is that the whole re-certification is BS - unless your tanks have VERY serious rusting - there is no issue. He said “new” valves are actually inferior quality to the older ones - made in China crap.

Also - if you’re considering the new fiberglass tanks, he suggested to hold off - they have had LOTS of issues with them & has stopped selling them.

We also just had our tanks “recertified”. Went to propane company and all they did was spray some soapy water around the valve. Any bubbling and they change the valve. No bubbles, no new valve. That test (and valve change if necessary) gets you a sticker on your tank and makes them good for another 5 years. In our case, one passed and the other failed so we had to only replace one valve. We (and prior owners) were careful to address any indications of rust and our original tanks look brand new. Gas place commented the tanks looked great, but also mentioned they fill rusted ones provided they pass that leak test.
