Can someone give me the dimensions of area rugs in 3 areas.....rug from port steps to starboard?
Rug in galley? Rug at entrance in main cabin?

we don't have "full" area rugs we have 2-34"x20". one at bottom of cockpit steps and the other at bottom of the salon steps, port to star.

Finding the right sizes to fit has been a challenge.

The rug we use at entrance is 30” x 48”. It covers most but not all of the area from steps to steps.

The floor by the table in the salon running from the port to starboard steps is 20” x 96”. We use a 20” x 60” rug in that space. (FYI that’s the same size that fits outside the head.) We used to use 1 or 2 20” x 34” rugs there but I prefer using one longer rug.

The galley is a real challenge. The dimension from the steps to the fridge cabinet is 18.5”w x 58”l at the steps and tapers to 17.5” wide by the fridge. We use an 18” x 40” thick gel mat to cover the space by the sink and cooktop - I have yet to find a longer mat for this area - and love the thicker mat in the galley.

We're in the Pacific Northwest with water temps year round in the lower 50’s so our floors in the hulls are pretty chill. To completely cover the galley floor I also use 2 much thinner 18” x 30” mats under the gel mat - 1 in front of the fridge and the other at the steps. The one at the steps I had to trim because of the angle of the cabinet to the right of the pantry closet. It’s not perfect, but helps keep it a bit warmer underfoot and allows access underneath. And especially since our boat is in a charter fleet, it helps protect the wood floors from drops of heavy objects like cans/ pans / utensils.

One tip ... the area at the table is exactly 20” wide. Check the actual size of rugs claiming to be 20”. Based on my experience if it’s over 20” it tends to bend up a bit and then the rug “walks” up the side. Not an issue if you don’t mind adjusting the rug fairly frequently.

That’s actually a much more complicated question than I thought! We bought our boat with custom carpets, but just tried to measure to answer your question. The only easy one is the one going from port to starboard and ours is 98” x 19.75”. You don’t mention the year of your boat or whether it has the larger port side cabinet (normally for washer) and those answers will change carpet size.

Carpet is easy to cut and ravel-free if cut with a hot knife. Easy and neat.

Just take a length of coat hanger, bend it to a shape you like, hammer it flat in the cutting area, and put it in a 100-150 watt iron. Copper wire will work, but coat hanger lasts longer and heats faster.



A hot knife is handy for so many things, no sailor should be without one.

We had some custom made by Corinthian Marine. They have a pattern kit. Extremely satisfied with the outcome. Price was reasonable and the carpets are easy to take up and clean.

They may still have the patterns. As you may see from their website, they do have a library of patterns for standard sized boats.
