Tampa Bay Area Boatyards

Post by MikeH »

In December, I took Easy Riders in for her 20 -Year Overhaul at Coastal Marine in St Petersburg (www.coastalmarinellc.com), and I've been very happy with everything - the quality of the personnel, and the quality of the work. It's been the best boatyard experience that I've had yet. The communication with the yard was excellent from the outset, and they were very welcoming. Their documentation has been outstanding, and includes over 300 step by step photos for work items.

Easy Rider's gelcoat was in horrible condition. I had previously hired a Detailer to compound everything, and the results were not good, so I was convinced that I needed a full paint job. On arrival, Justin the yard foreman suggested that their Detailer Scott take a look. Scott was able to bring some test spots back to a full shine, and did an incredible job with the whole boat - saving me the cost of a paint job.

Everyone in the yard was a pleasure to work with. Although Coastal is not a DIY yard, they did not mind me doing my own projects concurrently with theirs. They have a great loft area with work benches, were good about sharing tools, and even provided an office where I could do Zoom calls for work.

The major work items were:
- New: Cutless Bearings, Mid-Bearings, Shaft Seals, Shaft Couplers, Engine Mounts
- Service props, shafts, rudders, rudder re-packing and post repairs, engine alignment, fuel polishing
- New engine water pumps, injectors and misc parts and hoses
- new steering ram, power bleed steering system, and engine control cables where needed
- bottom job and propspeed on props and rudders
- major service on Northern Lights Genset
- misc: electrical clean-up, new back-up bilge pumps and wiring, new lifelines
- fiberglass repairs to Bows, gelcoat repairs on hull, compound-wax-buff

Also, their subcontractor Richard at The Wrap Factory, did a fantastic job on the graphics and 438 feet of pin-striping. He included a photo album on his webpage: https://www.facebook.com/TheWrapFactoryInc/.

Coastal Marine is the former Endeavour commissioning yard, and is now under the new ownership of Arrowcat. Last week, I counted 8 power catamarans in the yard, so it looks like they're becoming specialists. Another local PDQ was also in the yard, with another local PDQ on the way in soon.
