I'm wondering what kind of expenses you anticipate and budget for in a given year? It's relatively easy to estimate how much fuel you'll burn and roughly what it might cost, but what about other expenses? Insurance? Yacht clubs? Maintenance?
we allocate money for maintenance including some money for the things that always break, haulouts, bottom paint, winterization if applicable, summer dockage, dockage for trips (if any).
Newbie, some items to consider that you will need to quote on your own:
Marina Slip Fees Annual
Winterization / Ground Storage/Haul Out
Oil Changes / Maint
Bottom Paint Annual Cost
Insurance
Fuel
Weekend Dockage/Trips/ Food
Startup Expense / Lines/ Fenders/ Etc....
Have fun....Sandy
The old rule of thumb is 10% of hull value. It more than held true for our old (30 yrs) Tri and so far with our new to us PDQ I'd say it is less but I can't really say by how much as I am still tweaking things. I'm fussy about mechanical things and the boat really wasn't used for several years. One thing I can say is that it is a myth that a newer boat won't need anything.
