hull rubber seals

Post by halfmoon »

I am about to replace the fairing seals on my saildrives but wonder if after eight years the two gaskets that keep water out of the hull should be replaced also. The manual says to replace every two years!

I'm in the process of replacing my stbd drive diaphragms. The Yanmar owner's manual does state the time period however the Yanmar shop manual in the dis-assembly instructions on pg. 2-5 note 1 says "Fully check the diaphragm (A) and (B) for cracking. If any cracks are found, replace." Here is the thing though you almost have to pull the drive to do this. Having just had both the new and old diaphragms in my hand I can say the diaphragms were in good shape and did not need to be replaced. However I have the parts so the new ones will go in. I will only inspect the port drive as per the manual. You'll have close to $500 in parts for each drive. I have only had the boat for 2 yrs so I don't know when last replaced but as mentioned they looked like new.
