Diesel/Electric auxilary

Has anyone explored this as an alternative to either the LRC or Outboard
auxilary?
Specifically, using dual electric motors to drive the props, fed by a minimal
battery bank fed by a diesel genset of appropriate size. I'm thinking more in
line with the Fischer-Panda combination

The cost & weight of the Solomon Technologies "Electric Wheel" with it's 144
Volt battery bank set up seems much too heavy for all but the largest Cats

Any thoughts especially as to applicability in PDQ 32 or 36?

I saw the Ozecodrive in the most recent issue of Multihulls. Looks small enough,
and cheap enough, to be a good fit for either the 32'er or 36'er.

The electric motor drive topic is currently being discussed on the Latitudes and
Attitudes message board. I have lifted the following site from their discussion
- http://www.ozecodrive.com - it seems rather interesting.

Carl,
Check out the Briggs & Straton "Etek" 8-15HP electric motor (28# - $435.00) at
http://www.teamdelta.com/products/prod5.htm
You would have to find an appropriate generator, control system, and cabling

What do you engineers think, Harvey?

The saildrives on the 36 rule out swapping to the type of folding prop that
would regenerate electricity while under way. Not an issue on a 32, it has
propeller shafts and plenty of room for flopping props. You only need 144 VDC to
get the -max- thrust out of Solomon's Electric Wheel, and nobody says you can't
trade off some "electrical range" and go to smaller, maybe even wheelchair sized
gel cells that will run a few hours less. Although Lucera just sold, It had a
HUGE diesel (40 hp)on the port side, a Yamahaha 9.9 on tuther side and might
have been a candidate for an electric outboard, which might justify its $3500
price tag if it could regen under way. I think there was another single deisel
boat, called Bocephus

But why bother? What needs to be improved when you can get 2000 hours of
reliable thrust, that you can hand start, for pennies compared to a die$el that
drags its feet in the water, chokes on Island fuel, and smells bad. Aren't we
more interested in sailing?
