Antares engines

Post by Chris Randolph »

I tried to post this before, but must have screwed it up somehow. Anyway, it strikes me that the Antares might be somewhat underpowered with twin 27HP engines. Thoughts from current owners?

(I currently have an Altair, but am thinking of moving up)

diesel power

Post by doubledutch »

Hopefully someone with an Antares will respond with direct experience however for what it is worth - I had a 27 HP diesel in my previous boat which was a 12000 lb monohull and it had power to spare so I would expect the 17,500 lb Antares with 2 X 27 hp engines working would be more than adequate. The high torque developed by the diesels allows larger props that give some pretty impressive thrust when you open the throttle.

I'm starting to do a little shopping, and speed under power is important to me. I notice that the Catana 43 comes standard with twin 40HP, as does the Moorings 42, and the Perry 43 is available in either twin 40HP or twin 50HP engines, so I'm curious why the Antares stock engines are twin 27s, and what kind of difference bigger engines would make in performance under power.
