Stowing a mast for Trucking

Stowing a mast for Trucking

Post by kd5ddo »

Does anyone have any experience on trucking a sailing PDQ. Specifically where to store the mast for transit. I was told somewhere else that I should just "strap it down on the port hull" but that makes me queazy just thinking about it.

Does anyone have experience with this, or some similar situation? Or maybe some ideas for properly securing the mast?

Hey kd5ddo,

When trucking the 32's and the 36's at the factory we would usually strap down the mast to the flat bed bunkering between the hulls. With lots of padding and strapped down tight we never had any problems. The other option is up on deck. For this we would run it down the port side with supports at the bow pulpit, on deck above the galley, and at the stern pulpit with lots of straps and rope to secure it. Between the hulls is the easier and safer way.

Hope this helps

Mr. Power,

When stowing it between the hulls for transit, should the mast be fully derigged... Spreaders, halyards, everythingl?

Hey kd5ddo,

I would remove the spreaders, VHF antenna, and mast head light, leave the halyards and stays attached, and then wrap the mast in plastic to protect it from road dirt.

hope this helps

That helps quite a bit. I appreciate the input, and with this being my first time dealing with this still (trucking a boat this bog, unstepping a mast this big, deriggin/rerigging etc) the differences from my racing cat days are many.
