Window Covers

Post by thinwater »

I got a pair of these from Outland a year ago and really like them, but they are a little pricey and I would like to DIY a couple more.

Any ideas for a widely-available material? These are expanded PVC. The attachment is by means of a cute custom button, but I wonder if the HD 3M releasable fasteners would do a nice job. I suspect HDPE might be a problem, as the 3M adhesive might not like such a low energy surface. They would leave a 1/8-inch gap, though I don't know if that matters.

I noticed that Grizabella used thing FRP (Home Depot FRP paneling?).

a. The sun was affecting it and it seems it might be abrasive to polycarbonate. Thoughts?
b. Why only the 2 hatches?

I need to think of something UV resistant, softer than polycarbonate, and with enough surface energy that self-adhesives can stick well. Hmm.

Let's see how these work out. I borrowed the material idea from Grizabella, but had to change the attachment (3M Dual Lock). About $2 each in materials and about 15 minutes to make, once you get it dialed in.

Drew - how about sunbrella with a sewn loop on the perimeter with a cord to pull it tight?

I had some that didn't fit well on a prior boat; they slid under foot and sometimes caught in the gasket, causing leaks. But I have nothing against them, I'm just trolling for ideas.

The other thing to consider is windows that are not on hatches. In this case I used canvas, but plastic covers could work.
