cell phone hookups

Thanks for the helpful replies on the bridle question and mast stepping- I
really appreciate it!
Now another- anyone have a cell phone system installed on their boat? I want to
put a car kit into the boat, where I can pop my Nokia phone in and out, and use
a separate handset, as in my car. I haven't talked to Rory about this yet, but
am interested to hear if anyone has done something like this, or used a combo
VHF/cellular attenae vs a rail-mounted dedicated cellular antennae, etc.? Thanks
in advance,
Chris

Hi Chris.. I may have some input that may or may
not be helpful. I have worked with NOAA taking care
of their east coast ships electronics for 20 yrs

Step back a bit. in the days of analog cell phones
with full 4-5 watts output, you could get a 3-6db
gain cellphone whip and mount on top of mast nice
and high and get as muchs as a 60 mile offshore
range. But alas with the new smaller and low powered
phones putting out only a few hundred milliwatts
that don't happen now. The new phones along with
being lower powered are smalled and most down't
even have a connection for external ant. They are
also operating at a higher frequency making the
ant. very short. Putting a ant up high for more
range is pretty much out due to low power and the
line loss for the coax run. You can try the small
mag mount ant. that can be hooked to some units
today and set it out and as high as the little
coax will allow, that may help somewhat

About the best you can do is climb on cabin top
with phone and hope for the best

Using computers and Palm Pilots is also now quite
feasable with a lot of new systems and phones. I
had SunComm and it worked with them, I now use
Sprint PCS and am able to access the web with
them using my laptop or Palm Pilot, but alas they
do charge you a bit more for this air time

Good luck. Don
