Salt Build-up

Posted by Dan Hofmann on August 25, 2001 at 08:26:00:

I just rebuilt a 9.9 (it started) and while hot testing it I decided to look
into how we can flush out the salt. Using water only for my test I discovered
that pouring water down the thermostat opening resulted in water pouring out the
bottom of the engine as fast as I poured it in. I then tilted the engine on a 45
degree angle and forced water into the upper water fitting on the cylinder head

This allowed me to fill the head with water and you can actually see it fill
into the thermostat opening. I put the thermostat housing back on and forced
more water in until it came out, probably from the bypass hose

Now I need to decide what to use. I have heard suggestions of viniger, muriatic
acid and oxolic acid (spelling??). Does any have any experience on this part of
the problem.

Salt Away is a product available from West Marine which should do the job.

Hi Dan,
I've always flushed with fresh water but Lee Henderson uses a product he got at
West Marine which is supposed to clean the buildup. Suggest you contact him

Good Luck!
