Generators Gas or Diesel?

Posted by Richard Eisen on March 14, 2002 at 11:16:00:

I am ready to have a generator installed in my cat
Perseverance 36' Classic and was wondering what any of you have out there. size
and load, gas or diesel, and brand names and problems

I don't believe I need more than a 5 or 6 KW since I only have a 16,000BTU Air
conditioner and a heart 2000 inverter charger. No watermaker yet

any and all replies are appreciated

Hello Marc,
I have specified a generator for my classic 3693

Simon strongly recommended Entec. He has installed about 6 by now and has not
heard of significant problems. Its reasonably light and very quiet

Hi Richard,my boat came with a Kohler 6.5kw,gas genset. It,s been very good ,most
of the time. I've been able to do most of the maintainance myself, but when I
coudn't it was very expensive. Gas is the logical choice for the Classic. Mine
has a 4-stroke Honda aluminum engine that uses
about .6 gph. My refrig/frzr. has a 3/4hp AC motor,and I also have A/C,so I
guess that was the main reason for genset.Because of my cold plates,my DC
requirments are very low. When I'm cruising,I usually run the Gen. about 20
min./day to freeze the plates & charge the batts.I rarely use more than 30-35
amps/day. If I would have bought the boat new I probably would have gone with
other ways of making electricity, but since it came this way,and I didn't pay
extra for it, I'm enjoying it very much,
Regards,Marc P.S It weighs 190#
