A few messages back there was a lot of discussion about the problems with the
ST4000. I ended up purchasing a 4000+ Mk. II - which seems much improved. If
anyone is interested Pyacth (Pyacht.com)is advertising the following:[/i]

ST-4000 Plus MkII Wheel Pilot
Factory Remanufactured
25 Available as of 3/6/03 normally $797.95 - Buy for $599.95!
We returned over 10 of these units to Raymarine because the contents of the
packaging shifted during shipping. Many of the units suffered cosmetic damage to
the printing on the fluxgate compass, and/or an appliqué on the back of the
drive unit motor was peeled back at the corner. Now they are coming back to us
for liquidation at a substantial savings to you. Don't wait, these will sell
quickly

ST-4000 Plus MkII normally $797.95 - Buy for $599.95!

I had the same problem on Oceania in 1998. I wire brushed the female terminals
on the wire and the male terminals on the control unit to clean off a very light
layer of oxidation and it corrected the problem for several months

After about three months the problem occurred again so I replaced the wire
terminals with gold plated terminals from Radio Shack and the problem has not
returned

Rick,
We had a similar problem: all it would do was continue to turn in one direction

We just replaced the control head with a 4000+ unit, and it works fine. It does
sound like you may have a failure somewhere in the drive. You might see if the
drive motor turns, and if the wheel locks with the unit engaged. If both of
these occur, it might just be the control head. The 4000+ head makes the whole
unit operate much differently, and smoother

Terry

Roger,
My 4000 failed as we left the Cape May Canal. I was able to disengage it and
steer, but when I try to run the "setup" all it does is remain in one position
and "grind". Is this a common failure mode? What do you think, is it best to go
for one of these 4000+MK II?
