Hi All !
We had some excitement last Saturday night during a storm at Block Island. A large sailboat blew down on my mooring and got pinned broad side on my bows. The mooring field was very crowded, with high winds and a steep chop. Once I got cut loose, it took some chaotic maneuvering and full power reverse/forwards to get out of the mooring field without hitting another boat. In the process, I may have backed down over an unoccupied mooring ball. ( A big shout out to Harbor Master Kate McConville and her Mate Gary. They showed up in the rescue boat and saved my ass !!! )
During the action, a line got caught up in my port prop and shaft. Photos below. There was a plastic or fiberglass collar around the shaft forward of the prop, and I can't figure out what it is. There is no apparent damage to the cutlass bearing.
Do you know what this might be?

mike,
is the fiberglass (stern tube) holding the cutlass bearing still in tact? can't think of any fiberglass thing that would be there.

Mike,
This is a guess and only a guess. It looks like there is some nylon line hanging on the outside of it. It is possible that it all started out as a line wrapped around the shaft and as the prop shaft spun while you were trying to get free, it may have heat up and melted and then cooled to a hard material and appears to be a chunk of fiberglass?

That's what it looks like to me. A reformed line under heat.AlanH wrote: ↑Sun Jun 26, 2022 4:52 pm Mike,

Thanks everyone !
John - if I was thinking right, I would have asked you to dive the boat while you were here ... stern tube and cutlass look perfect.
Alan - the Sage of Palm Coast is as wise as ever !! I'll save the spun collar so you can see it in person.
