What are the reasons for diesels over outboards

My two cents
Outboards - cheaper, lighter, faster
Diesels - heavier, slower, longer life, more elec
I was anti-outboard when I looked at PDQ 8 years ago but am now very happy with
them. I use a Honda EU2000i generator through a Heart Freedom1000 charger to
charge batteries when the solar panels can't keep up.

We chose diesels over the outboards for several reasons. We felt the diesel were
much quieter at full throttle, they're faster under power, and they can generate
a lot more electricity. If we had the outboards, we'd proably get a genset, then
we'd have three engines to maintain, two fuel tanks etc
My advice - if you're planning a lot of powering and/or have high high electric
needs (like a big freezer), consider the diesels. Otherwise the outboards would
be fine.

One small problem with diesels is unravelling the occasional lobster/crab
potline from the propellor, particularly in the cold DownEast waters
It's pretty easy to tilt up an outboard and detach the things, even in rough
water
Speaking from multiple experiences.

Could those of you that have PDQ 36's with diesels, what speeds do you get
running with just 1 diesel in use?
I'm thinking of buying a PDQ 36 down the road, and if it had outboards, I'd put
a diesel in the port hull and keep the starboard. outboard for assistance when
maneuvering into docks only
Thanks,
Evan Gatehouse

Reasons for diesels?
more amperage from the alternator, to power all that heavy stuff. Better bite on
the water when you're motoring around because there isn't enough wind to sail
with all that heavy stuff. Much safer to carry fuel with a higher flash point,
even if you are lower in the water. You don't have to lift the damn things out
to get them serviced; diesel mechanics will come to You! (slightly more
expensive. Slightly longer wait.) When you replace an engine, it will still be
worth more than one of those throw-away outboards, and you don't have to have a
spare engine because there's no place to put it; it would sink your dingy
Diesel people love to spend money! (And scrub bilges....) PLUS
Anywhere you go, it will smell just like you're stuck in traffic behind a city
bus!

Are the diesels slower than outboards, I know they are much quieter

The outboards are pretty quiet. I don't think I'm the only owner who has tried
to start a running engine! "Page 83" hull #32030

I don't think they are quieter. I've slept thru a watch with the engines running
at 3/4 throttle, but I haven't that experience on a diesel boat. Ask someone who
has sailed both
There is supposed to be a full knot difference under sail, because the outboards
weigh less and don't drag in the water. Has anyone had any experience with
folding props?
There is a plus for the diesels; They shift more positively, and the props wash
the rudders, improving maneuverability in tight quarters.
