It was great to see such a positive review of the PDQ 34 in the March ‘07 issue of Powerboat Reports. As a no-ad publication (like Consumer Reports) these articles tend to be reasonably objective.
Besides the complementary comments, I was happy to see some actual performance figures for a 100-hp PDQ 34 - to my knowledge, the first time this info has appeared in print. Interestingly, they show a 3000 RPM cruise speed of 18 mph (15.6 kt) with fuel consumption of 6 gal/hr - which yields a mileage of 3mi/gal and a range (assuming 90% fuel capacity) of 426 miles.
Although we’ve never recorded an average consumption above 4.6 gal/hr, I believe steady running at 15+ knots probably does consume about 6 gal/hr. In fact, this is exactly the figure I posted (as a guess) on our web site last summer. (Our performance page showing our figures to date can be seen at: http://www.geocities.com/snodoglog/Performance.html )
I was amused by one of their negative comments: that the aft cabin hatches needed to be bigger in order to serve as emergency exits. Perhaps, for ever growing Americans, they don’t meet the current spec. But I can testify that they are plenty big enough for a normal-size person to go in and out of – and it wasn’t even an emergency! Certainly for us, these hatches serve admirably as escape routes. I can only speculate as to the size of the Powerboat Reports reviewer!

Hi Henry, Thanks for the heads up on the PDQ review. I read it and it was pretty much on point. I have the 75 Yanmars so my experience regarding performance is a tad slower of course. The space between the forward windows can be a minor inconvience however if you loose sight of something it just takes a second and it pops back into view. I have never really thought about existing the rear stateroom windows but I would imagine it can be done. I agree that the reviewer may be a large guy. I was not aware the newer 34's have a 17 " prop, I think I have 16's on my boat. I wonder what difference the 17's would make on my boat? Overall I think the reviewer did a good job picking up the finer points of the boat. Nice to see you Henry in Ft. Lauderdale last month. Regards,
