Chesapeake PDQers- question
Posted by Chris Randolph on April 28, 2003 at 13:20:00:
I was hoping to visit that new Hyatt resort up the Choptank this past weekend,
but noted that the route 50 bridge clearance is listed at 50'. I got some
different opinions from people that I talked to at the yacht club in Cambridge
about the actual height. Anyone taken a PDQ 32 with the taller rig under this
bridge? Sorry for the rather specific question that might not be of interest to
most, but I know there are a few Chesapeake cruisers on the list. Thanks,
Chris

This is sort of related to your question. I have a tall mast with a tricolor and
VHF antenna on top.
I went under the FL Okachobee Waterway RR bridge at a Corp of Engineers reported
height of 51.7'. The antenna was bent double clicking the girders
That sets my minimum bridge clearance at bout 51.5'. Does this sound about
right?

My understanding was that the actual masthead was 49'5" above the water, and I
was figuring on an extra foot for the WSI/VHF antenna. Since you were touching
the antenna on a 51'7" bridge, you can imagine my reluctance to venture under a
bridge listed at 50'. This new Hyatt resort is pretty nice, and I'd like to go
back by water. I have called their harbormaster and suggested that they use
their (probably considerable) influence to get the bridge clearly marked. I'm
hoping to see at least a 52' clearance at low tide to get under.
