Mast Steps

has anyone installed mast steps on their boat -- the stainless ones that you
bolt into the mast on either side to climb up like a ladder?
Will this compromise the strength of the mast significantly? How abot getting
sheets & sails caught up in them when tacking?
Thoughts?
Cindy
p.s. Our boat (Hull #3) has no spreaders -- are all PDQ's like this? Does anyone
know why they chose to do this -- I have not seen other cats like this?

I didn't see where any one answered you. The 36's do not have spreaders because
they are wide enough to get a good angle to hold them up. We own a 32 but have
cruised with a lot of 36's and they are all standard like that
Have you seen the mast step system made up of loops that are on a sail tape that
goes up the groove in the mast using your main haylard?
