Does anyone have any advice for getting the main pivot tube out of the tilt bracket? I'm hoping to restore the tilt by replacing the plastic bushings, spring, and tilt lever.
The bracket sides seem to be pressed onto the tilt tube. I'm sure they can be pressed out; I'm hoping someone else has already figured this one out.

a. I believe the instructions are in the shop manual. However, I tried to follow the procedure and everything was so frozen the risk seemed too great. Yup, lots of PB Blaster.
b. The whole mess is so corrosion prone and troublesome, I would suggest doing as most have done and buld a hold-down based upon straps. A bit more time consuming in use (must lift the covers) but utterly dependable and trouble free.

Of course, this can also be done with pulleys, but I can't see the benifit. I'm now so used to opening the cover and looking the engine over (checking oil, pumping the primer, checking the cooling water flow) that I like the reminder.

Re: Bracket pivot dissassembly
Thanks Drew,
I have the pull down ropes set up with pulleys already. I just happen to have a few engines laying around and I figured I'd take a look into fixing the brackets, it'd be nice if everything worked the way it's supposed to. I'll look through the manual and give it a shot on one of the older engines I have laying around.
I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

In your blog, I looked at the pics but can't seem to see how the engine is held down (while motoring) to prevent cavitation, and how it is held up when sailing. Can you elaborate?thinwater wrote:b. Here's the post where described how I set it up using ropes and pulleys.

Re: Bracket pivot dissassembly
My starboard engine is held down with a seat belt-like strap. It raises with the stock pulleys. Not elegant, but it works.

My PDQ Mentors, the Bartholets led a line from the engine lower units forward under the bridge deck and aft to a convenient cleat. Not elegant, but perfectly functional.

The Bartholets were my mentors also,
