Installing the new 9.9 Yamaha - success!!!

Post by Kokomo »

I just finished installing the new 9.9's in hull #80.

Thanks to Chris (s/v Cat Tales) and the detailed info he provided when he documented his installation, mine went very well. The new US engines were much less than the Canadian models that several other owners have used to minimize the installation but, now that it's done, the next remove/replace should be simple (unless Yamaha redesigns the 9.9 again).

The only things I would add to his article are:

1) The throttle has to be reversed from the existing way to the opposite (converted from the pull to push I think). Chris obtained instructions from the company and the conversion was easy and free.

2) Instead of bringing the lines attached to the raising/lowering lever into the cockpit, I left them in the engine well.

3) This is still a tight fit and I'm not sure how well it can be done on the older models where the lid to the engine well does not come down the side as in the newer hulls.

4) While Chris did his while in the water, I was hauled for regular bottom painting and that made installation much easier.

Many many thanks to Chris for the upfront work.
