Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
We are looking to store Pacfica on the hard while she is for sale. Any tips on the best places to store the boat? Is it possible to get insurance coverage for Hurricanes? Any insurers you'd recommend?
Thanks for the help this is our first hurricane season in Florida.

Check www.pdq36.com for the list of some marinas capable of hauling the 36.
One place to check that is very protected is Indiantown Marina up the St. Lucie River along the Okeechobee Waterway. We stayed there on our trip across last Nov and really liked the place. Many cats hauled for the season there.

Sam,
Thanks for the great info as usual!
Did you cross the Okeechobee via southern shore or direct across the lake? How did it go?

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
I just double checked and Indiantown can only haul cats to 15'-9". (i.e. Prout and Gemini cats) so the 18'-3" PDQ 36 is a no go.
American Custom Yachts (www.AmericanCustomYachts.com / contact: Bill Wolf @ 772-286-2835) seems to be the best value in the area and apparently at least three PDQ 36's were stored there last year.

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
Sorry, I thought they told me they could haul me there. Must have misunderstood. Also, check Gasparilla Marine near Punta Gorda if you will be on the West Coast.
We took the short route across the lake, no issues. The rim canal is shallow, has lots of hurricane debris, and is longer. If you get a chance, make the trip across the canal, it was beautiful, just don't do it in the heat of the summer, too many skeeters. We went in Nov and it was perfect.

Hi Sam,
We'll be heading across soon via the middle channel. Thanks for the tip.
My insurance broker up in Annapolis says that I need to be North of NC/VA border to be insured through the companies he represents. Any thoughts on who I might work with down here in FL?

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
I use Paul Phaneuf at Allstate Floridian in Tampa, FL for all my insurance needs. Very reliable and best price on my boat, car, and home. Already had a total loss claim on my previous vessel and they covered me better than expected. You can call him at 813-353-0303. Not sure if they are writing new policies but it never hurts to ask.

American Custom Yachts may be OK for storage, but be VERY cautious about having any work done there. I had the worst experience of my 35 year sailing career there. A terribly unscrupulous company that will rip you off every way possible. I wouldn't recommend them to my my worst enemy.

Hi Ed,
Any thought on other storage facilities in FL. I'm having a tough time finding big enough travel lifts.
Any comments on insurance?

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
There is another very large storage facility on the canal between Ft Myers & the Lake O. I can't remember the name of it but I believe that they do handle large cats there. I haven't mentioned it before because they don't allow owners to visit there boats when on the hard (duh!). I know you're trying to sell yours, so I figured you wouldn't be interested. I can dig up the name if you like.
Meanwhile, Pensacola is 3-4 day sail from Ft Myers and it has two different lifts that can handle your boat and provide long term storage on the hard. One is the Pensacola Ship Yard (don't let the name intimidate you) and the other is Brown Marina (Brown was recently bought by someone, so the name may have changed. My recommendation is Pensacola Ship Yard. Treondle Marine is at the ship yard (Barb -- 850-433-1477).
Good luck, Ed

Dave,
A popular long-term storage yard in NE Florida is St. Augustine Marine. Our PDQ was stored there when we first purchased her.
For insurance you can also try BoatUS. They may be a little pricier than some others, but you can choose either "agreed value" or "market value". More importantly they don't have restrictions for hurricane prone areas.

We had a very bad experience with Gasparilla Marine, as did Allezcat.

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
Sunshine and Next Exit (both 36's) are currently on the hard at Westland Marina at Titusville and, earlier this spring, there were five PDQ's there -- sort of a mini PDQ-fest. Westland is not to be confused with Titusville Municipal Marina which is immediately adjacent to it.
We are very pleased with Westland. The staff is great and the yard manager is very experienced. It's a DIY yard with a very informal atmosphere. The only rules are the ones we all learned in kindergarten. There aren't a lot of amenities, but if you're storing your boat there, who cares? There is also a great community of cruisers at Westland in case you do plan to spend some time there. Sundowners under the "lean to" are a nightly occurence. You will need a car, though, since there isn't much within walking distance except for a West Marine Express and a small-ish grocery store.
I would recommend Westland very highly. There's also a good anchorage right outside the marina if you want to drop the hook and dinghy in to check it out.

Re: Haul out / Storage / Insurance in Florida
I was looking for insurance that would allow me to be in FL all-year. Boat US gave me a quote; however, it was about 25% more than being above the FL line by June 1st.
I also heard that St. Augustine Marina could haul PDQ's; however, I have not made contact.
Now, does anyone know of a haul-out in southern GA?
