4 Stroke 8hp Yamaha Installation on Mk III

Does anyone have experience with 2006 Yamaha 8hp engines? These have power tilt. Is it a direct fit? If I change back to 9.9s, will there be re-engineering involved? The boat is a 2000 Capella Mk III.

I think I read somewhere that the 9.9s were not available for a period of time due to not meeting emission standards. Otherwise, it is the same outside configuration.

How much of a performance loss does the 40% hp reduction realize?

What are the pros and cons?

My thinking is I keep them until they wear out. The PO may have gotten six years from his original engines. There are probably seven years on these two. I should expect to change out the impeller at the earliest opportunity.

The cruise won't begin for about three years. It will be coastal cruised in the western GOM near Corpus Christi.

Thanks,

Joe Mc

Best suggestion? Run them till they fail. Right before you head over the horizon get the latest greatest available.

Thanks AmyTom!!

Is the fit of the two models the same? Is it likely to change every so often as the engines evolve?

Don Casey's book doesn't address them at all. Can you recommend a good resource?

The best info source on Yamaha 9.9s and 8s? This forum!

As Anytom said, just wait until they wear out. An engine swap is a (long) one day job and not worth worrying over. I've done it twice. There are always some minor changes due to difference in options and model years, but only simple things.

Sounds good.

I'll yell when I need a hand and sagely wisdom.
