Has anyone tried sound deadening foam? Anything else?

The idea of reducing space in the well sounds bad.

TomKat had the lead lined foam covering the sides and top of the engine well but it was trying to fall off and I was constantly taping it up and adding adhesive. I removed it all and did not notice any difference in noise level. My brother-in-law is a musician and he say that 80% of the noise is the boat reverberating like a guitar and amplifying the engine noise.

It makes sense to me. Has anyone tried isolating the vibration with engine pads?

Agreed, all parts. Yeah, I suppose you could do something with mounts, but...

a. I would be concerned about movement. The pads would have to be quite thick to de-couple the important sound range (the very high stuff is not the problem as it is not in the "guitar" range and is muffled by the cover).

b. I built up my transom thickness (core deterioration) and haven't got any clamping room left.

c. I'm going out tomarrow. Perhaps I'll take a sound meter and play with a quilt.

The best solution is upgrading sailing performance!

Don't bother with the sound deadening foam. I installed it but the sound level difference is not noticeable.

Yup, that's my impression. I threw some quiots and sheets over it today and even the dB meter showed nothing.

So, are the new style motors still quieter than the old ones? Or do they get louder as they break in?

I didn't put a dB meter on the old ones, so I'm guessing. Yes, certainly quieter at idle. Wide open too, but no major difference, just what you would expect.

Good to hear. I'm getting closer to repowering. I've been piecing older ones together for too long. Anyone need parts for the older style 9.9's? I've got a dozen in the garage

My mechanic and I have done a good job maintaining my engines, but still, they are 1995 so almost 20 years old, and have close to 2000 hours. All fresh water, though. One of them did not start at all this Spring, after a very hard and cold winter. We thought it was a coil or something like that. But after some troubleshooting and unplugging and cleaning everything and putting all the wires back, it started up. These engines are great and also frustrating ... great in that they are not that complex to work on and I can do many things myself but frustrating in that they have intermittent problems, always at the wrong time.
