Does anyone know where to get a motor hoist for the dingy? What research I have done shows very expensive systems. Maybe something to clamp on a rail that can be portable. Would love suggestions

You can check out my topic on adding a drum winch to handle the heavy (engine) side easier. I have not looked into a powered hoist, but good luck.

I've always been of the opinion that if I have to take the motor off, the motor is too big or the davits need improved. Not worth the trouble to take the motor off, no way. The boat works for me, not me for the boat.

You might consider tricing the dinghy, with lines under it to help support the weight.

i agree with thinwater. we've carried our 10'6" west rib w/15 hp 2 stroke on davits for 13 years . we've crossed the gulfstream 26 times. if you TOTALLY immobilize the dinghy once it's up the davits are more than up to the load.

My 15hp Honda weighed about as much as my AB Rib. I had heavy duty web straps with loops on each end made to lift motor. (Harnesses advertised for outboards are flimsy junk IMHO.) Used motor's web straps to lift dinghy aft. When needed, I used davit hdwe to take motor off Rib.

The OP asked for something that could clamp on the rail. That is almost certain to either bend the rail or start a leak at the stanchion base. Not a good idea.

Lyons Pride,

Have a look at St. Croix cranes. They can be mounted on the inboard transom area quite nicely, if you have the aft seat/ davits combination.
