Spares

I searched for a recommended list of spares for our boats and didn’t see one so thought I’d start a thread and get everyone’s thoughts. Amazon with basically next day service has changed the dynamic for cruising in the US, but many of us take our boats outside the US and need to carry parts, but what should they be? Here’s what I have (or wish I had) and please add more based on experience:

Multiple primary and secondary fuel filters
Joker valve replacements
Spare diaphragm for relevant pumps
Spare valves for relevant pumps
Spare water pump for water system
Spare fuel filter for dinghy
Spare dinghy prop
Complete set of fuses
Spare belts
Selection of hose clamps
Duct tape(!)
Spare “water in fuel” sensor
Sufficient replacement oil (I’m carrying 14 gallons)
Dinghy patch kit
Back up nav (charts on iPad AND phone)
Spare impellers
Spare dinghy transom plug

depending on impeller type, you'll want an impeller puller for rw pumps. don't forget generator impeller. maybe generator type specific but a spare capacitator. maybe a spare yanmar thermostat (depending on far out you're going).

in general, think about which systems would make the boat uninhabitable and then figure out what can break.

In addition, we carry:

interior lights (all LED now) - yes, the cheap ones do fail
bulbs for the nav and anchor lights (prior to switching to sealed LED (highly recommended)
anodes for rudders, props, dinghy engine
dinghy spark plugs
dinghy prop nut and washers
bilge pump (with integrated float switch)
spares for the generator as mentioned
extra boat hook

We don't carry:
a spare solenoid for the propane. I think you can often repair a sticking one, but would be a problem without a cooking stove.
a spare solenoid for the anchor windlass. I have repaired that after sticking with corrosion and it is not hard.
spare main engine props, but know those who do.

A few more:

We have a 10 inch sediment filter in our fresh water system and we carry at least 3 spare filter cartridges.
Spare chargers for our electronic devices.

This is a great topic... in addition to what's already been shared, I would add:

• Engine starter motor
• Engine fuel filters (primary and secondary)
• Alternator
• main macerator pump (had to replace it twice in the last 2 years)
• toilet macerator pump (had to replace it once in the last 3 years)
• Salt water washdown hose pump (had to replace it once in the last 3 years)
• 1 Gal of 50/50 engine coolant
• Fuel and coolant filters for the Webasto hydronic heating system (if you have this system)
• Absorb pads for under the engines
• Various small parts: nuts & bolts, electrical wiring connectors, hose clamps, gaskets, masking tape, etc.
• 30amp/20amp adapter
• 30amp/50amp adapter
• 30amp power cable
• Supply of AA, AAA and 9V size batteries (based on the devices on your boat)
• Outboard motor - Spare prop

Thanks, Mac. I forgot to mention a few more things that I carry that you listed.

Nick,

When you get to a point where you feel you have a enough input from us, I suspect we all would appreciate it if you would send us the compiled list.

I am having trouble with posting to the forum right now (see my connectivity post), but will be happy to summarize the spares list and post once I figure out how to get dependable forum access. Thank you to Sam for his admin work and for helping me communicate here.

I only ask because people have asked me to make a list and I can’t respond.

Thank you in advance.

Nick

To add to the above - Easy Riders' plumbing system is the Whale 15mm with push fittings. I had an assortment of fittings but did not have spare shut off valves to use in case of a leak.

One of the cockpit shower flex hoses ruptured, and I had to shut down the water system. An easy fix would have been to slide the elbow off the 15mm pipe, and slide on a shut off valve.
